Every Alomations listing run ends with one publishing setting: publish the listing live in your Etsy shop, save it among your Etsy draft listings so you can look first, or, with Bulk Automate and scheduled publishing, drip a batch out a few listings a day. Publish live when your template and mockups are already proven, choose a draft when something about the run is new to you, and drip when a batch is bigger than you want to release at once.
This guide is for sellers who have made their first few runs and want a simple rule for which setting to use, and for anyone coming from listing by hand who is used to checking every field before pressing publish. The setting does not change what the run makes. It changes when buyers can see the result, and how much of your time sits between the run and the first sale.
What each option does
All three start the same way. You bring a design, pick your mockups and a template, and start the run. The run prepares print-ready files, renders the mockups, writes a title within Etsy's 140 characters, all 13 tags and a description, applies the template's price, variations and profiles, and then hands the listing to Etsy in the way you chose. Our explainer on how a listing run works covers each step.
Live
The listing is published straight into your Etsy shop as an active listing, ready to buy. A run starts at 90 seconds for a listing with one mockup, and the time varies with what you ask for. Etsy says that once published, a listing may take up to 48 hours to appear in search results and categories.
Draft
The same listing is saved as a draft in your Etsy shop. Nothing is missing from it, and nobody can buy it until you publish it. Going live never requires a draft: the draft is there only for the runs you want to look at first.
Drip
Bulk Automate turns each selected design into its own listing, and it can publish them live, save them as drafts or drip them out a few a day. Scheduled publishing does the same for listings you queue: they go live over time instead of all at once.
Live, draft and drip side by side
| Option | What happens at the end | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Live | Published as an active Etsy listing | Proven templates, seasonal deadlines, large volumes | A template mistake repeats on every listing |
| Draft | Saved as an Etsy draft, not yet buyable | New templates, new products, personalized designs, adding your own video | Drafts nobody reviews earn nothing |
| Drip | Listings go live over time, a few a day | Big batches, spreading renewals and workload | Seasonal listings still need to be live before their window |
When to publish live
Live is the right default once the parts of the run you control have been checked. That means a template whose price, shipping profile, return policy and processing time you have already seen on a published listing, designs you reviewed in the Design Library, and mockups you have looked at before the run.
It also suits deadlines. A seasonal design saved as a draft and forgotten for a week can miss most of its window, and the 48 hours Etsy may need to show it in search come on top of that. The run's accuracy rules apply either way: titles say Custom or Personalized when the design is personalized, sample names stay out of the copy, fabric claims match the template's materials, a long-sleeve shirt is never called a tee, and Etsy listing attributes are filled from the product.
When a draft review suits you better
Drafts are for the runs where something is new. The common cases:
A new template or product type. Look at the first listing in Etsy before you trust the template with a batch. Our guide to building your first listing template lists what to check.
A brand-new shop. Your first listings set the tone, and a draft lets you see them the way buyers will.
Personalized designs. Confirm that personalization is on and that the instructions read well.
Your own photos or video. Etsy allows up to 20 photos and 2 videos per listing, and smart mockups count toward the 20. If you want to add a short video of the real product, a draft gives you the moment to do it.
The title and the URL. Etsy says a listing's URL "is based on the title you enter when you first publish the listing", and since March 2026 listing URLs stay fixed after the first publish. If you want to adjust a title, the draft is the place.
Thumbnails. Since June 2026, Etsy lets sellers preview listing thumbnails before publishing, which fits naturally into a draft review.
Our checklist for checking an Etsy listing before and after it goes live works well as a draft review routine.
When to drip instead of publishing all at once
Dripping is for batches. If Bulk Automate has just turned a collection of designs into listings, releasing them over several days spreads the work that follows: messages, orders and the occasional fix.
It also spreads fees and renewals. Etsy charges $0.20 per listing, a fee that "Has to be paid regardless of resulting sales", and "A listing expires after 4 months." A batch published on one day expires on one day too, while a dripped batch comes up for renewal in smaller groups. What Etsy does not confirm is that publishing order changes how search ranks a listing, so drip for the practical reasons. Our article on drip publishing or all at once looks at that question in detail.
Setting it up in Alomations
The choice sits on the run itself: one setting, live or draft, next to your mockups and template. Bulk Automate adds the drip option for batches, and scheduled publishing lets you queue listings to go live over time. A live queue shows what is running and the run history what has finished, and multi-shop publishing sends one run to several connected shops, each with its own template, mockups and shop section.
After the run, the listings manager shows every connected shop's active and draft listings in one list, with bulk edits for prices, tags, variations and the publish schedule, and a score with ten checks for each live listing. Scheduled publishing, multi-shop runs and run history open on the paid plans (Starter at $49, Standard at $99.90 and Pro at $169.99 a month). The Free plan gives 40 credits a month once your shop is connected, enough for about 4 to 6 full listings. Details are on the pricing page.
Frequently asked questions
Can I publish a draft later?
Yes. A draft stays in your Etsy shop until you publish it, and nothing in it is lost in the meantime.
Does publishing live skip any checks?
No. Live and draft runs make the same listing under the same accuracy rules. The only difference is whether it goes live straight away.
Which setting should I use for my first run?
Either one works. If the template is new to you, a draft lets you see its first listing the way buyers will, and once it looks right you publish live. If the template is already proven, publish live straight away.
Does dripping listings help them rank?
Etsy does not confirm a ranking effect from publishing order. Drip for practical reasons, such as spreading workload, fees and renewals.
