To check an Etsy listing properly, review it twice: once before you publish, against Etsy's own rules for titles, tags, photos, attributes and policies, and again in the days after, when you can see how it appears in search and what Stats say about it. The first pass catches mistakes that are hard to undo, and the second tells you whether the listing is found and clicked.
This is for sellers who publish a listing and move straight on to the next one. Most of a listing can be edited later, but not all of it, and a listing that sits unchecked for weeks wastes the time it spends live. A short routine at both stages takes minutes and replaces guessing with evidence.
Why one listing needs two checks
Some details are fixed the moment you publish. "Your listing's URL is based on the title you enter when you first publish the listing" (Etsy on SEO for Google), and since March 2026 "Listing URLs now remain fixed after a listing is first published" (Etsy updates). A typo or a weak first title stays in the URL for good.
Other things can only be judged after publishing: whether the listing shows up for the searches you wrote it for, how the thumbnail crops in results, and whether people who see it click. That needs live data, so the second check comes later.
Before publishing: the words
Title
"A listing's title can be up to 140 characters long", and Etsy suggests "less than 15 words" while avoiding "repetition as well as subjective words" (Etsy's listing guide). Say what the item is first: Etsy advises you to "Clearly describe your item at the beginning of the item title", and notes that "Search engines only show the first 50 to 60 characters for a page title" (Etsy on SEO for Google). Our 140-character title formula covers the wording.
Tags, attributes and category
"You can use up to 13 tags per listing" and "Each tag can contain up to 20 characters" (Etsy on tags). Use all 13 and keep them varied. Then fill the attributes, because Etsy's advice is to "Fill out both attributes and tags for your listings" (Etsy on attributes), and since March 2026 materials exist only as an attribute. Pick the most specific category possible, which is one of the checks on Etsy's Search Visibility page (Etsy's Search Visibility page). Our guide to Etsy listing attributes shows which ones help.
Description
"A person should be able to read the first sentence and know exactly what you're selling" (Etsy on SEO for Google). Read your first sentence on its own. If it opens with a greeting or a story, move the plain description up.
Before publishing: photos, options and policies
Photos. Etsy allows up to 20 photos and 2 videos per listing (Etsy's listing guide). It recommends photos of "at least 2000 pixels" in width and height, says the first photo "should be horizontal (landscape) or square", and does not support transparent PNG files (Etsy's photo guide). Since June 2026 you can preview thumbnails before publishing, so use it. Our guide to what your first Etsy photo has to do explains the crop.
Variations. Check that every size and colour combination has the right price and SKU. Etsy allows unique prices, SKUs and quantities for up to 400 option combinations (Etsy on variations).
Return policy. Etsy names a missing return policy among the things that can push listings lower, so set one even if it says no returns (Etsy on search ranking).
Shipping. For US sellers, "US listings with domestic shipping prices lower than $6 will be prioritized in search" (Etsy's Search Visibility page).
Disclosures. If a production partner makes your items, Etsy requires you to disclose that partner in the listing (Etsy's listing guide). If the design is a seller-prompted AI creation, Etsy requires you to disclose the use of AI (Etsy's item categories).
After publishing: search, thumbnails and Stats
Give the listing time to settle. "Once published, it may take up to 48 hours for your listing to appear in Etsy search results and categories" (Etsy's listing guide), and later changes "can take up to one day to reflect in search" (Etsy announcement). Editing in a hurry during those hours only makes it harder to tell what worked.
| When | Where to look | What it tells you | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Same day | The thumbnail on phone and desktop | Whether the first photo crops well | Swap the first photo if the product is cut off |
| After 48 hours | Etsy search for your main phrase | Whether the listing is in search | Results differ per shopper, so also search the exact title |
| First week | Etsy's Search Visibility page | Listing and shop issues Etsy flags | Fix flagged items one at a time |
| Weeks 2 to 4 | Stats: views, visits, favourites, orders | Whether it is found, and whether it convinces | Few views: title, tags, category. Views without sales: photo, price, description |
| A day after any edit | The same search again | Whether the change is live | Compare with the numbers from before the edit |
Etsy says "Search results are ordered by how relevant the items are to what you search for" (Etsy on search results) and that results differ from shopper to shopper (Etsy on search ranking), so not finding your listing once is not proof of a problem. For thumbnails, Etsy's advice is to "Position your image so your subject is clear in all 3 views used across Etsy" (Etsy on thumbnails).
Stats tell you which half of the problem you have. Few views point to findability. Views without favourites or orders point to the photo, the price or the description. Etsy Stats explained walks through each number, and our article on whether editing a listing resets its ranking covers what to expect when you change a live listing.
How Alomations checks a listing, before and after
Before publishing, a listing run can save the listing as an Etsy draft instead of publishing it live, so you can look first: it is one setting on the run. The run writes a buyer-intent title within Etsy's 140 characters, all 13 tags and a description, fills Etsy listing attributes from the product, and keeps fabric claims in the copy in line with the template's materials.
After publishing, the listings manager (every plan, Free included) gives each live listing a score: ten checks, each with the fix attached. When a check points at the words, Update SEO rewrites the title, tags and description of the live listing, and the first rewrite per listing is free. When it points at the images, you can swap the mockups of the live listing. You can also ask Aloma, the AI assistant, which of your listings score under 70.
For the whole shop, the shop report on paid plans gives a scored health check with an action plan and a PDF. More on each tool is on the features page.
Frequently asked questions
Does editing a listing after publishing hurt it?
Editing is a normal part of running a shop. The one thing an edit will not change is the URL, which stays fixed after the first publish, so get the opening of the title right before you publish.
How soon should I judge a new listing?
Wait at least the 48 hours Etsy mentions for search, then give Stats a few weeks before making big changes. Judging a listing on its first two days of data usually leads to changes that fix nothing.
Can I see how my listing looks before it goes live?
Yes. Since June 2026 Etsy lets you preview listing thumbnails before publishing, and saving the listing as a draft lets you review the whole page first.
Should I also check listings that already sell?
Yes, now and then. Photos, prices and shipping profiles drift out of date, and a periodic check catches that before it costs you sales.
You can score your live listings and create new ones, live or as drafts, on the Alomations Free plan, with no card needed.
