Good tags for Etsy t-shirt listings are 13 short phrases a buyer might type, spread across what the shirt is, who it is for, the occasion, the style and the niche. Below are four worked tag sets for typical shirt listings, with the reason each tag earns its slot, so you can adapt a set instead of facing an empty tag field.
This is for sellers with a shirt design ready and a blank tag field. If tags are new to you, start with how many tags Etsy allows and how each one works.
The rules every tag set has to fit
Etsy allows up to 13 tags per listing, each up to 20 characters. Tags can only include letters, numbers and spaces, and apostrophes and hyphens may appear inside a tag but cannot start one. A tag can be a short phrase, and Etsy's advice is to "use a diverse array of tags" for search visibility (Etsy tags).
The same article says tags "are great for aspirational or buyer-minded search terms", with "gift for her" as the example, and "are helpful when there's no matching attribute". Etsy asks you to fill out both attributes and tags (Etsy listing attributes), and since March 2026 materials exist only as an attribute, because the Materials tag field was removed (Etsy updates).
For a shirt, that means writing phrases rather than single words, leaving colour and fabric to the attributes (see which listing attributes help shoppers find you), and using all 13 slots.
How to split 13 tags on a shirt listing
This is our starting split, a habit rather than an Etsy rule, and each set below bends it.
Product (2 to 3 tags): what the item is, in buyers' words.
Recipient (2 to 3 tags): who it is for.
Occasion (1 to 3 tags): the moment it is bought for.
Style (1 to 2 tags): the look.
Niche (2 to 4 tags): the specific group or interest.
Broad product phrases are shared by many listings, while niche phrases describe your design in particular.
Four example tag sets for shirt listings
Set 1: a kindergarten teacher shirt for back to school
The design: retro lettering that reads "Kindergarten Teacher" with a small pencil drawing.
| Tag | Characters | Slot | Why it earns the slot |
|---|---|---|---|
| teacher shirt | 13 | Product | The plain name of the item, the broadest search |
| teacher tee | 11 | Product | The shorter word some buyers type instead |
| kindergarten teacher | 20 | Niche | The grade level the design names, using all 20 characters |
| elementary teacher | 18 | Niche | Reaches buyers searching the wider grade group |
| back to school shirt | 20 | Occasion | The main buying moment for this design |
| first day of school | 19 | Occasion | The same moment, phrased as the day itself |
| teacher appreciation | 20 | Occasion | A second gift moment later in the school year |
| gift for teacher | 16 | Recipient | A buyer-minded phrase of the kind Etsy recommends |
| new teacher gift | 16 | Recipient | A narrower gift search for someone just starting out |
| retro teacher shirt | 19 | Style | Names the lettering style the buyer wants |
| cute teacher outfit | 19 | Style | Reaches shoppers who think in outfits rather than shirts |
| school staff shirt | 18 | Niche | Group buyers dressing a whole team |
| teacher life shirt | 18 | Niche | A phrase teachers use about themselves |
Nothing in the set says black or cotton: colour and material live in the attributes.
Set 2: a dog mom shirt
The design: hand-drawn paw prints around the words "Dog Mom". The recipient and the niche lead.
dog mom shirt
dog mom tee
dog mama shirt
gift for dog mom
dog lover gift
fur mama shirt
dog owner gift
rescue dog mom
dog mom birthday
mother's day dog mom
funny dog shirt
dog walking shirt
pet lover tee
The product tags cover the names buyers give this shirt ("dog mom", "dog mama", "fur mama"), and the gift tags carry much of the buying intent, because a design like this works as a present too. "mother's day dog mom" uses an apostrophe, which Etsy allows inside a tag, and lands exactly on 20 characters. For breed versions, give each breed its own listing and swap two niche tags for the breed.
Set 3: a matching family Christmas shirt
The design: a family Christmas graphic with space for the family name. The occasion leads.
christmas shirt
family christmas tee
matching xmas shirts
christmas party tee
holiday family photo
custom family shirt
personalized xmas
family name shirt
kids christmas shirt
christmas mom shirt
christmas eve shirt
christmas gift idea
winter holiday tee
The occasion appears in most tags, each time paired with something different: the family, the party, the photo, the person. "holiday family photo" names a reason families buy matching shirts, a buyer-minded term in Etsy's sense. Use "custom" and "personalized" only when the buyer really types the name in.
Set 4: a retro mountain sunset shirt
The design: a 70s-style sunset behind a mountain range. The style leads.
retro mountain tee
vintage hiking shirt
mountain shirt
hiking shirt
camping shirt
70s style shirt
granola girl shirt
nature lover tee
outdoor lover gift
gift for hiker
adventure tee
national park tee
road trip shirt
Here the look is part of what the buyer wants, so "retro", "vintage" and "70s style" take three slots, and "granola girl shirt" names an aesthetic, the kind of aspirational phrase Etsy says tags suit.
Mistakes that waste tag slots
Three spellings of one phrase. "teacher shirt", "teacher shirts" and "teachers shirt" fill three slots with one idea, the opposite of the diverse array Etsy asks for.
Single words. "shirt" alone says little, when "gift for dog mom" fits the same slot.
Subjective words. Etsy advises leaving words like "perfect" out of titles (Etsy listing guide), and the same thinking applies to tags: shoppers describe what they want, not how good it is.
Attributes repeated as tags. Colour and material belong in the attribute fields.
Names you do not own. Brand names, characters, celebrities and sports teams belong neither in your tags nor in your designs.
Empty slots. Every unused slot is one phrase fewer describing your listing.
Etsy's tags article does not say whether tags should repeat the words in your title, and we look at that question in should your Etsy tags repeat the words in your title.
To adapt a set, type the start of each phrase into Etsy's search bar and read the suggestions, as in how to find Etsy keywords from the search bar. Keep the product tags, rewrite the rest around what your design says, and if a tag runs over 20 characters, shorten a word ("tee" for "shirt") rather than cutting the phrase.
How Alomations writes the 13 tags in a listing run
In Alomations, a listing run writes all 13 tags for each design, together with a buyer-intent title within Etsy's 140 characters and a description. It then applies your template and publishes to Etsy, live or as a draft, whichever you chose for the run. You set your tag style once in the SEO preferences, and every run follows it.
Titles say Custom or Personalized when the design is personalized, a long-sleeve shirt is never called a "tee", fabric claims match your template's materials, and listing attributes are filled from the product, so attributes and tags each do their own job. Frequently asked questions
Should every t-shirt listing use all 13 tags?
Yes. Etsy allows 13 tags per listing (Etsy tags), and an empty slot is one phrase fewer describing your shirt. If you run out of ideas, add another recipient or occasion before repeating a phrase.
Can I copy the same tag set onto every shirt?
Keep the product tags when the item is the same, then change the rest. The niche, occasion and style tags are what tell search what each design is about.
Do my tags have to be in English?
Write them in your shop's language. Etsy translates listings automatically, and you can add your own translations of titles, descriptions and tags for the languages you add in Shop Manager (Etsy translations).
