Does the Etsy description affect search ranking?

Etsy does not name the description among the search factors sellers control. What the description does for Etsy search, for Google and for the buyer, and where to spend your effort.

Etsy does not name the description among the search factors it says sellers control: those are titles and tags, attributes, listing quality and customer service. The description earns its place elsewhere, on Google, where Etsy advises a clear first sentence with natural keywords, and with the shopper, who reads it to decide whether to buy.

This is for sellers who spend a long time tuning each description for keywords and wonder whether it pays off. The answer changes how you split your time on a listing. Etsy's own guidance points the search work at the title, the 13 tags and the attributes, and gives the description a different job: making sure the right buyer understands the item and orders it with confidence.

What Etsy says decides search placement

Etsy describes its search in plain terms. Search results are ordered by how relevant the items are to what you search for, and on its page about ranking, Etsy says sellers control the most important factors in Etsy Search placement, naming tags and titles, attributes, quality and customer service. The description is not on that list.

The same picture shows on Etsy's Search Visibility page. Its listing checks are about images (at least one, a high-resolution and clear primary photo showing one finished product, no collage), the most specific category possible and a return policy. Again, nothing about the description. Etsy's attributes article adds one instruction worth following to the letter: "Fill out both attributes and tags for your listings." The description does touch this indirectly: since a June 2026 update, Etsy suggests attributes based on listing details such as category and description, so a clear description helps you fill the attributes that do count.

What we do not know matters too. None of the Etsy help pages we read says whether Etsy search matches words in the description at all. So we would not count on the description to rank a listing in Etsy search, and we would not stuff it with keywords in the hope that it does.

What the description does for Google

The description's search value is outside Etsy, because Etsy listing pages can also appear in Google results. In its advice on being found in search engines, Etsy gives three direct instructions for the description, all from the same article:

The same Etsy article covers the other Google levers: search engines only show the first 50 to 60 characters of a page title, so lead your title with what the item is; add descriptive alt text to each image; and fill in your shop's About section, because Google likes to see your expertise and trustworthiness as a seller.

What the description does for the sale

A shopper who clicks through has already decided the item looks right. The description's job now is to answer the questions that stand between them and the order: size and fit, material, print method, care, processing and shipping time, and exactly how to fill in the personalization box.

It is also part of your promise. Etsy Purchase Protection covers sellers when the item matches the listing description and photos, but a buyer claims it does not, and the same page lists "The item doesn't match the listing description" among the cases it does not cover. A vague or inflated description weakens your position in exactly the disputes where you need it.

Two more practical points. If you work with a print partner, Etsy says you must disclose that production partner in your relevant listings. And Etsy machine-translates listings automatically for shoppers in other languages, so short, plain sentences tend to come through the translation better than long ones packed with keywords. Our guide on how to write an Etsy description buyers actually read has a full structure.

Where to spend your effort

Listing partWhat Etsy's help pages sayBest use of your time
TitleNamed as a search factor, up to 140 characters, search engines show the first 50 to 60Say what the item is first, in natural words
TagsNamed as a search factor, up to 13 tags of up to 20 charactersVaried buyer phrases, no wasted slots
AttributesHelp buyers find items, fill out both attributes and tagsFill every relevant one, materials included
Primary photoOn the Search Visibility checksOne clear, well-lit finished product
DescriptionNot named as a search factor, first-sentence advice is for search enginesClear first sentence, then the details buyers need

Materials deserve a note. Since a March 2026 update, Etsy removed the Materials tag field, and materials now exist only as an attribute. If you used to rely on that field, fill the attribute instead. Our article on Etsy search ranking factors sellers can control goes through each factor in more depth.

Description myths to drop

  • "Only the first 160 characters count." Etsy's help articles mention no such rule, and no description character limit either.

  • "Repeat your main keyword for ranking." Etsy explicitly advises against repeating the same phrases over and over.

  • "Paste your 13 tags at the bottom." Same problem, and it makes the listing harder to read.

  • "Longer descriptions rank higher." No Etsy page we read says so. Write as long as the buyer's questions need, and no longer.

How a listing run writes your description

In Alomations, a listing run writes the description together with the parts that carry the search work: a buyer-intent title within Etsy's 140 characters and all 13 tags. It then applies your template and publishes to Etsy, live or as a draft, whichever you choose for the run. Etsy listing attributes are filled from the product, so the factor Etsy names alongside titles and tags is not left empty.

The copy is also checked for accuracy, which is what protects you in a dispute. Fabric claims in the description match the template's materials, titles say Custom or Personalized when the design is personalized, sample names stay out of the copy, and a long-sleeve shirt is never called a "tee". You set title length and tag style once in your SEO preferences. For listings already live, the listings manager's Update SEO rewrites the title, tags and description, and the first rewrite per listing is free. Our article on how Alomations writes titles, 13 tags and descriptions and the how it works page show the full run.

Frequently asked questions

Should I put keywords in my Etsy description?

Yes, naturally and mostly in the first sentence, which is what Etsy advises for search engines. Avoid repeating the same phrase, and put your real keyword effort into the title, tags and attributes.

How long should an Etsy description be?

Etsy's help articles give no length rule or character limit. Make it long enough to answer the buyer's questions about size, material, care, shipping and personalization.

Will editing my description hurt my ranking?

None of the Etsy help pages we read says that editing a description lowers a listing's ranking. Etsy does say changes can take up to one day to reflect in search. We collected what else is known in does editing an Etsy listing reset its ranking.

Do translated descriptions help in Etsy search?

Etsy confirms that listings are translated automatically and that manual translations override the automatic ones. It does not say that translations improve ranking, so treat them as a help for buyers, not a search tactic.
