You can get mockups for Etsy listings from four kinds of sources: a built-in mockup library inside a listing or print on demand tool, an online mockup generator, a paid mockup pack (often Photoshop smart object files), or your own photos of a sample. Whichever you choose, check three things before a mockup goes live: the licence allows use in your Etsy listings, the product in the photo is the product you ship, and the image meets Etsy's photo guidelines.
Most print on demand sellers need mockups because the product does not exist until someone orders it. One design might come in several colours across shirts, mugs and totes, and photographing all of that is not realistic. The right source depends on how many listings you make, how much control you want over the look, and how much time you are willing to spend in an editing app. If mockups are new to you, start with what a mockup is and why Etsy sellers use them.
Built-in mockup libraries
Many listing and print on demand tools come with a library of product photos ready to receive your design. The main advantage is that the photo shows a product the tool can actually produce, so the colour, cut and print placement in the image line up with what the buyer receives. Built-in libraries are also the fastest option, because placement is already set up for you.
What to check: whether the library covers the exact blanks and colours you sell, whether you can preview every colour before publishing, and whether you can download the images or only use them inside the tool.
Online mockup generators
Mockup generators are websites where you upload a design, pick a scene and download the result. Many have a free tier, which makes them a good way to test a design before you invest in it. The trade-offs are usually watermarks, smaller exports or a limited set of scenes on the free tier, plus the chance that the same popular photos appear in many other shops. Our article on free t-shirt mockup generators and their limits goes into detail.
What to check: the export size, whether commercial use is allowed on the plan you use, and whether the blank in the scene matches the brand and colour you ship.
Paid mockup packs and Photoshop templates
Paid packs are sets of styled photos, often supplied as Photoshop smart object files: you paste your design into one layer and the file wraps it onto the product. They give a consistent, styled look across a whole shop and are popular for wall art and branded flat-lays. They also take the most time per image, and you need an app that can open the files. See what a smart object mockup in Photoshop is for how they work.
What to check: the licence terms (one shop or several, commercial use, any limit on products), the resolution of the base photo, and whether the garment colour can be changed or each colour comes as a separate file.
Your own photos of a sample
Ordering a sample and photographing it gives you images no other shop has, and it is the only way to show the real print texture and fabric. It costs a sample order and some time, so many sellers do it for their strongest designs rather than for every listing. A phone, daylight and a plain background go a long way.
What to check: light that shows true colour, a frame that crops cleanly to a square thumbnail, and the same blank and colour you list. Our guide to using your own product photos as mockups covers lighting and reuse.
Mockup sources compared
| Source | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in library in your listing tool | Speed, and photos that match products you can produce | Coverage of every blank and colour you sell |
| Online mockup generator | Testing designs on a small budget | Watermarks, small exports, licence limits, scenes many shops use |
| Paid mockup pack or smart object file | A consistent styled look across the shop | Time per image, licence terms, garment colour options |
| Your own sample photos | Unique images that show the real print and fabric | Cost of samples, lighting and consistency |
What to check before any mockup goes live
Etsy's rules apply whatever the source. You can add "up to 20 photos and 2 videos" to each listing (Etsy listing guide). Etsy recommends listing photos with a width and height of at least 2000 pixels, says the first photo should be at least 635 pixels in each direction to avoid showing up lower in searches, and asks for a first photo that is horizontal or square (Etsy photo guidelines). The same page lists the accepted files as .jpg, .gif, .png, .svg or .heic and notes that transparent .png files are not supported, so export mockups with a background.
Accuracy matters as much as quality. Etsy's search visibility checks include a primary photo that shows one finished product, not a collage (Etsy search visibility). And Etsy Purchase Protection lists "The item doesn't match the listing description" among the cases it does not cover (Etsy Purchase Protection). A heather grey mockup for a shirt that ships in plain grey is a small detail that can turn into an expensive one.
Finally, read the licence. Free does not always mean free for commercial use, and some licences limit how many shops or products can use an image. Our article on mockup licences explains what to look for.
Where Alomations fits
Alomations includes a built-in mockup library of ready product photos for the products in our catalog, so you can list a design without owning a photo of it. These are smart mockups: your design is rendered onto the product photo with real fabric folds, shading and light, and anything in front of the design, such as a hand or a strap, stays in front. You can pick a background for flat-lay shots, use the zoom control so a product photographed from further back fills more of the frame, and preview every colour and every side before the run. Smart mockups are free to use, can be downloaded, and count toward Etsy's 20 images per listing.
On paid plans you can also build your own mockup library. Upload your own photos, set the print area once, and reuse them in every run. In Mockup Preview you can change the shirt colour of your own photo live, so one good sample photo can cover several colour options. Both are described on the features page.
Frequently asked questions
Are free mockups safe to use on Etsy?
Many are, but only under their licence terms. Check that commercial use in product listings is allowed and whether the licence limits the number of shops or products.
What size should an Etsy mockup be?
Etsy recommends listing photos at least 2000 pixels wide and tall, and the first photo should be at least 635 pixels in each direction so it does not show up lower in searches.
Can my mockup show a different shirt colour from the one I ship?
It should not. Show the blank and colour the buyer will receive, because Etsy Purchase Protection does not cover items that do not match the listing description.
How many mockups can one listing have?
Up to 20 photos and 2 videos per listing, according to Etsy's listing guide. Use the first slot for the clearest single product shot.
You can try the built-in smart mockups with your own designs on the free plan, with no card needed.
