Free t-shirt mockup generators and their limits

Free mockup generators usually restrict watermarks, export size, licence terms or colours. Here is which limits matter on Etsy and when free is enough.

A free t-shirt mockup generator is enough for Etsy when its export has no watermark, is at least 2000 pixels on each side, comes with a licence that allows commercial use and is available in every shirt colour you sell. When one of those is missing, the gap shows up in your listing photos, which is where buyers judge your product.

This is for sellers listing their first designs without a budget for photo shoots or paid mockup packs, and for sellers who started with free tools and now wonder why their listings look less convincing than the shirts deserve. Free tiers change often and differ from tool to tool, so treat this as a checklist to run against the terms of whatever generator you use today.

What free generators usually restrict

Most free plans hold something back to encourage an upgrade. The restriction is rarely hidden, but it is easy to miss until the image is already in a listing.

Watermarks

The most visible limit is a logo or text stamped across the image. On Etsy a watermarked mockup reads as unfinished, and it appears in every place the photo does, from search results to the listing gallery.

Export size

Some free exports are small or heavily compressed. Etsy recommends that listing photos have "a width and height of at least 2000 pixels or more", and says the first photo "should have a width and height of at least 635 pixels to avoid showing up lower in searches." A small export can pass the minimum and still look soft when a buyer zooms in on the print.

Licence terms

A free download is not automatically free to use in a shop. Some tools restrict free images to personal use or ask for credit, and a listing photo is commercial use. Read the licence before you publish, and see our guide on mockup licences for what to look for.

Colours and products

Free libraries often carry a handful of shirt colours and one or two garment styles. If you sell a colour the tool does not have, you end up showing the design on something close, and close is a problem (more on that below).

Shared scenes

Everyone using a free library draws from the same photos, so the same model or the same wooden table can appear in other shops. It does not break any rule, but it makes your listing harder to tell apart in a grid of similar results.

Export format

Some generators export a transparent PNG by default. Etsy states that "Animated .gif files & transparent .png files are not supported" for listing photos, so export with a solid background.

Which limits matter on Etsy

Why the mockup has to match the product

A mockup is a promise about what arrives. If your free tool's grey is lighter than the blank you sell, the buyer receives a different shirt from the one in the photo. Etsy Purchase Protection covers cases where the item "matches the listing description and photos, but a buyer claims it does not", and it does not cover a case where "The item doesn't match the listing description." Use a mockup of the same style and colour you sell, and if the tool does not have it, choose a different mockup rather than a near match.

Etsy's Search Visibility page also lists checks on the primary photo: high resolution, one finished product rather than a collage, and clear, good lighting. A free mockup can pass all three if you pick it with those checks in mind. For what separates a convincing shirt photo from a flat one, read t-shirt mockups for Etsy: what makes one look real.

When free is enough, and how to get the most from it

Free works well when you sell a few colours the tool has, the export is clean at full size, the licence covers commercial use and you are listing a handful of designs. It starts to strain when you have many designs in many colours. Etsy allows up to 20 photos and 2 videos per listing, and filling those slots by hand, one design and one colour at a time, adds up fast.

To get the best result from a free generator:

  • Upload your print file at full size so the tool never stretches a small image.

  • Place the design at a realistic size and height on the chest, not floating at the neckline.

  • Export one image for each colour you actually offer.

  • Keep the first photo square or landscape, as Etsy recommends.

  • Check the crop. Etsy asks you to "Position your image so your subject is clear in all 3 views used across Etsy."

  • Save a copy of the licence terms on the day you download, in case they change later.

The most common ways these images go wrong are collected in mockup mistakes that make Etsy listings look fake.

Smart mockups on the Alomations free plan

The Alomations Free plan costs $0 and gives 40 credits a month once your Etsy shop is connected, enough for about 4 to 6 full listings, with up to 4 AI images a month, real orders and the listings manager included, and no card required. Smart mockups are free to use: your design is rendered onto product photos with real fabric folds, shading and light. A background picker covers flat-lay shots, objects in front of the design such as a hand or a strap stay in front, and a zoom control makes a product shot from far back fill more of the frame. You can preview every colour and every side before the run, and download the images.

The built-in mockup library holds ready product photos for the catalog products, so you can list a catalog product without owning a photo of it. Etsy allows 20 images and 2 videos per listing, and smart mockups count toward the 20. Paid plans add your own mockup library for your own photos. The free plan guide shows what 40 credits cover, and our features page lists the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use free mockups on Etsy?

Yes, when the licence allows commercial use, the image has no watermark and it shows the same product and colour you sell. Read each tool's terms before you publish.

What size should a t-shirt mockup be for Etsy?

Etsy recommends listing photos of at least 2000 pixels in width and height, and at least 635 pixels for the first photo to avoid showing up lower in searches.

Why does my free mockup look fake?

Usually because the design sits flat on the shirt with no folds, shading or light, or because it is placed at an unrealistic size or height. Real fabric texture and a sensible placement fix most of it.

Are Alomations smart mockups free?

Yes, smart mockups are free to use. The Free plan includes 40 credits a month for listings once your Etsy shop is connected, with no card needed.
