A mockup is an image that shows your design on a product, such as a shirt, a mug or a framed print, before that product has been made. Print-on-demand sellers on Etsy use mockups as their listing photos because nothing is produced until a buyer orders, so the mockup is how the buyer sees what will arrive.
If you sell designs rather than stock, your photos carry the whole listing. The buyer cannot touch the shirt or hold the mug, and in search results the first image is often all they see before deciding to click. This guide explains what a mockup is, how print-on-demand sellers use them and what makes one believable.
What a mockup is
A mockup starts as a photo or a render of a blank product with a marked print area. Your design is placed into that area and shaped to the product, so it follows the fabric, the curve of a mug or the edge of a canvas. The result looks like a product photo, and for the buyer it works like one.
Sellers mix a few kinds:
Flat-lay: the product laid on a surface, often with props, which shows the whole design clearly.
Model or lifestyle: the product worn or in use, which shows fit and scale.
Room scene: wall art hung in a real-looking room, which shows size.
Detail: a close crop of the print, the fabric or a mug handle.
You can build mockups in a photo editor from a template, use a mockup generator, or pick from a library inside your listing tool. Whichever route you take, use images you have the right to use commercially: our guide to mockup licences explains what to check, and how to make a mockup, step by step covers the editing.
Why print-on-demand sellers use them
With print on demand you hold no stock. Photographing every product in every colour would mean ordering and shooting each one, then doing it again for every new design. A mockup shows the design on the exact blank and colour the buyer will pick, on the same day you finish the artwork.
Mockups also let you answer questions before they are asked. Etsy's listing guide allows up to 20 photos and 2 videos per listing, so there is room for the front and back, each colour, a close-up of the print and a size chart. A consistent set of mockups across the shop also makes it read as one brand rather than a pile of unrelated listings.
What Etsy expects from listing images
Mockups are listing photos, so Etsy's photo rules apply to them. Etsy recommends listing photos of at least 2,000 pixels in width and height, and says the first photo should be at least 635 pixels wide and tall to avoid showing up lower in searches. That first photo should be landscape or square, with enough border to be cropped, because Etsy shows it in square, portrait and landscape views. Etsy's advice is to position your image so your subject is clear in all 3 views, and since June 2026 you can preview thumbnails before publishing.
File format trips up new sellers. Etsy accepts .jpg, .gif, .png, .svg and .heic files, but transparent .png files are not supported, and neither are animated GIFs. Your print file should be transparent, while your mockup should be a flat image with a background. Etsy also warns that images over 1MB may not finish uploading on a slow connection, and it converts images to the sRGB colour profile.
The first photo feeds search too. Etsy's Search Visibility page checks for a high-resolution primary photo that shows one finished product, not a collage, and is clear and well lit. Etsy also recommends descriptive alt text for each image. Our guide to Etsy mockup size and dimensions has the measurements in one place.
What makes a mockup believable
A buyer decides in a second whether a mockup looks like a real product or a sticker pasted onto a photo. These checks separate the two.
| Check | A believable mockup | What gives it away |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric and surface | The design follows folds, seams and curves | The print sits flat on top like a sticker |
| Light and shading | Shadows and highlights fall across the print | The print is brighter or flatter than the product |
| Print size | Matches the real print area of the product | The design covers an area no printer would |
| Colour | The product colour matches the blank you sell | A shirt colour the blank is not offered in |
| Placement | Sits where the printer will put it | A chest design hanging at stomach height |
| Objects in front | Hands, straps and drawstrings stay in front of the print | The print floats over a hand or a strap |
| Scale | Wall art and mugs shown at real size in a room or a hand | A poster that looks far bigger than its listed size |
Start with the first two rows: a design that ignores folds and light reads as digital, even to buyers who could not say why. Our list of mockup mistakes that make Etsy listings look fake goes through each one.
Mockups and honesty
A mockup is a promise about what will arrive, so it has to be accurate. Show only the colours you actually offer, keep the print at the size your printer produces and show the blank you really ship. Etsy Purchase Protection covers a seller when an item matches the listing description and photos but the buyer claims it does not, and it does not cover an item that doesn't match the description. An accurate mockup keeps you on the right side of that line.
The simplest check is to order one sample of your own product, hold it next to your mockup, and adjust colour, size and placement until the two agree.
How Alomations handles mockups
Alomations has a built-in mockup library of ready product photos for the products in its catalog, so you can list without owning a single product photo. Its smart mockups render your design onto those photos with real fabric folds, shading and light, and objects in front of the design, such as a hand or a strap, stay in front. A background picker sets the scene for flat-lay shots, a zoom control lets a product shot from far back fill more of the frame, a front mockup can carry its own chest-logo spot, and you can preview every colour and every side before the run. Smart mockups are free to use and downloadable.
On paid plans you can also upload your own photos as a personal mockup library, set the print area once and reuse it in every run. Etsy's limit of 20 images per listing still applies, and smart mockups count toward it. Read more about smart mockups in Alomations.
Frequently asked questions
Can a mockup replace a product photo on Etsy?
For print on demand it usually does, because the product is made only after the order. What matters is accuracy: the item the buyer receives has to match what the listing shows.
What size should an Etsy mockup be?
Etsy recommends at least 2,000 pixels in width and height, and at least 635 pixels for the first photo. Make the first image square or landscape with room around the product for cropping.
Can I upload a transparent PNG as a mockup?
No. Etsy does not support transparent .png files for listing photos, so export mockups as a JPG or as a PNG with a solid background.
How many mockups can one listing have?
Etsy's listing guide allows up to 20 photos and 2 videos per listing. Use the slots for each colour, the back, a close-up and a size chart rather than near-duplicates.
