To make a mockup, you choose a blank product photo, place your design on the product's print area at its real size, match it to the fabric's folds and light, then export the image at the size Etsy recommends. You can do this in Photoshop with a smart object, in a mockup generator, or in a tool that renders the design onto the product photo for you, and the steps are the same in every method.
This guide is for sellers preparing their first listing, or whose mockups look as if the design was pasted on top. A mockup is the image that shows how your design will look on the product, and, with your title and description, it is what a buyer judges the product by before it is in their hands. So we look at each step through the buyer's eyes.
Step 1: Prepare the design file
A good mockup starts with a good file. Save your design as a PNG with a transparent background, because JPEG does not support transparency and the areas that should be transparent can come out white (a provider's file guidelines). In a mockup, that means a white box on a coloured shirt.
The resolution needs to be right from the start too. The usual recommendation for PNG print files is 300 DPI (a provider's file guidelines), and since the design in the mockup comes from this file, a low-resolution file looks blurry in a close-up shot. If you will also offer the product in dark colours, prepare a light version now, with dark lettering turned white.
Step 2: Choose the right product photo
The photo is half of what makes a mockup believable. When you choose one, look for:
A clean, blank product. No print, no tags, no pile of creases.
A straight-on or slightly angled shot. The print area should be clearly visible, with the product centred in the frame.
Soft, even light. Hard shadows darken part of the design, and Etsy asks for a primary photo that is clear and well lit (Etsy search visibility).
The right colour. The product colour in the photo should match the item the buyer will receive.
Enough resolution and room. The final image will be at least 2000 pixels, so the photo should be at least that large, with space around the product for cropping.
The right to use it. Not every photo you find online is cleared for commercial use. Check the licence or take your own photo, as we explain in mockup licences.
Step 3: Place the design and match the light
Place the design at its real size. Print areas vary by provider and product, so check your provider's template and never show the design larger than the product can actually be printed. On an adult shirt, a design that starts a sensible distance below the collar and sits centred on the chest looks real.
Then fit the design to the fabric. In Photoshop, the common way is to put the design in a smart object, bend it to the folds with a displacement map, and lay the fabric's shadows over it with a suitable blend mode, usually Multiply on light fabric. We explain how smart objects work in what a smart object mockup in Photoshop is.
Three details keep a mockup from looking fake:
Do not lower the design's opacity to "blend" it in. That makes the print look faded and nothing like a real print.
Objects in front of the product (a hand, a strap) must stay in front of the design, so mask them.
Adjust the design's tone to the light: the part in shadow should darken a little, and the lit part should stay bright.
We collected the other errors that give mockups away in mockup mistakes that make Etsy listings look fake.
Step 4: Export for Etsy
Once the mockup is ready, save it to Etsy's rules. The table collects the settings to check when you export.
| Setting | Etsy's guidance | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Size | At least 2000 pixels in width and height recommended | The print stays sharp when the buyer zooms in |
| First photo | At least 635 pixels, landscape or square | To avoid showing up lower in searches |
| File type | .jpg, .gif, .png, .svg or .heic | These are the types Etsy accepts |
| Transparency | Transparent .png and animated .gif are not supported | Save the mockup with a solid background |
| File size | Images over 1MB may not finish uploading on a slow connection | Compress without visible quality loss |
| Colour profile | Etsy converts images to sRGB | CMYK is for print only |
| Cropping | Thumbnails are cropped to square, portrait and landscape | The product must stay clear in all three views |
| Count | Up to 20 photos and 2 videos per listing | Room for every colour and angle |
The image rules in the table come from Etsy's image guidelines, the three-view advice from its thumbnail article, and the photo and video count from its listing guide. Since June 2026 you can preview thumbnails before publishing (Etsy updates), so you no longer have to guess the crop. The full sizing story is in the best Etsy mockup size and dimensions.
Step 5: Complete the set and check it
One mockup is rarely enough. A solid set for a shirt listing usually includes a straight-on main photo, a close-up of the print, a worn shot, the colours you offer, a size chart and a short video. Etsy's search visibility page asks for a primary photo that shows one finished product rather than a collage (Etsy search visibility), so put a colour collage further back in the set.
Before you publish, look at every image small, on a phone screen. Make sure the design reads, the product stays in frame and the colour is close to the real thing. Fix and re-export any image that fails one of those three.
How Alomations makes mockups
Smart mockups in Alomations do most of the steps above for you. Your design is rendered onto product photos with real fabric folds, shading and light. Objects in front of the design, such as a hand or a strap, stay in front, you can pick a background for flat-lay shots, and a front mockup can carry its own chest-logo spot. A zoom (framing) control lets a product shot from far back fill more of the image. Before the run you can preview every colour and every side, and the images are downloadable. Smart mockups are free to use, and a built-in mockup library holds ready product photos for the catalog products.
If you prefer your own product photos, paid plans include your own mockup library. You upload your photos, set the print area once and reuse them in every run, and in Mockup Preview you can change the shirt colour of your own photo live. Etsy allows 20 images and 2 videos per listing, and smart mockups count toward the 20. The details are in smart mockups in Alomations.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need Photoshop to make a mockup?
No. Smart objects in Photoshop give you the most control, but a mockup generator or a tool that renders the design onto the product photo follows the same steps. What matters is not the method but whether the result looks like a real product photo.
Can I use a mockup I found online?
Only if its licence allows commercial use. Not every free download is cleared for use in an Etsy listing, so read the licence text or take your own photo.
What size should I save a mockup at?
Etsy recommends at least 2000 pixels in width and height, and the first photo should be landscape or square (Etsy image guidelines). A square image gives the fewest surprises when thumbnails are cropped.
Can I use my own product photo as a mockup?
Yes. Photograph the blank product straight on in soft light, then place the design using the steps above. On Alomations' paid plans you can upload that photo once, set its print area and reuse it in every run.
