Product photos for Etsy without a camera or stock

Print on demand sellers show products they have never held with mockups. What Etsy expects from listing photos, and the image set one listing needs.

Print on demand sellers do not need a camera or stock to show a product: they use mockups, real photos of the blank product with the design placed onto the print area. What matters is that those images show exactly what the buyer will receive, the same blank, the same colour and the same print.

This is for new sellers preparing a first listing and wondering how to photograph a product they do not have. In print on demand, the item is made after the sale, so there is nothing to photograph when you list. That is not a gap in your shop, it is how the model works, and a well-built image set makes a new shop look organised and trustworthy from the first day.

How you show a product you have never held

A mockup is a photo of a blank product, a tee, a mug or a canvas, taken in advance with a print area marked on it. Your design is placed into that area, and the result looks like a photo of the printed item. A good mockup follows the folds, shadows and light of the fabric; a poor one makes the design look like a sticker pasted on top. Our guide to what a mockup is and why Etsy sellers use them covers the basics.

There are three common sources: the built-in mockup libraries of print on demand tools, mockup sets you buy, and your own photos once you have a sample. Check the commercial licence of every mockup you buy or download; our article on mockup licences explains what the common licences allow.

What Etsy expects from listing photos

Etsy's help pages set both technical rules and content checks for photos:

On content, the test is what Etsy looks at in a dispute. Purchase Protection covers sellers when the item matches the listing description and photos but a buyer claims it does not, and it does not cover an item that doesn't match the listing description. Your photos are part of the promise you make to the buyer.

An image set for one listing

You do not have to fill all 20 slots, but every image should have a job. A solid starting set for a shirt listing:

Keep collages out of the main photo, but a colour grid works well as the second or third image. Our guide to what your first Etsy photo has to do in search results goes deeper on the thumbnail.

Using mockups honestly

A mockup is a tool for showing the truth, not for dressing it up. These rules make sure the buyer gets the product they expected:

We collected the typical giveaways of unrealistic images in mockup mistakes that make Etsy listings look fake.

Next step: samples and your own photos

Starting with mockups is the right way to begin, but once the first sales come in, consider ordering samples of your best sellers. A sample lets you check the print quality and the fabric, and it gives you real photos of your own to add to the listing. Our checklist for ordering samples of your own products covers what to look at.

The mockup library and smart mockups in Alomations

Alomations has a built-in mockup library of ready product photos for the products in its catalog, so you can list without owning a single photo. Smart mockups render your design onto product photos with real fabric folds, shading and light, and they are free to use. There is a background picker for flat-lay shots, objects in front of the design such as a hand or a strap stay in front, and a zoom control lets a product shot from further back fill more of the image. Before the run you can preview every colour and every side, and every mockup is downloadable.

Smart mockups count toward Etsy's 20 images per listing. Once you have samples, paid plans let you upload your own photos, set the print area once and reuse them in every run. You can browse the products on the catalog page and the mockup tools on the features page.

Frequently asked questions

Is it a problem to use mockups on Etsy?

Mockups are standard practice in print on demand. What matters is that the image shows the product the buyer will receive: the same blank, the same colours and a realistic print size. Etsy's Purchase Protection rules turn on whether the item matches the listing's description and photos.

What size should the main photo be?

Etsy recommends at least 2000 pixels in width and height and says the first photo should be no smaller than 635 pixels. Use a square or landscape image for the main photo.

Can I upload my transparent PNG design as a listing photo?

No. Etsy does not support transparent .png files as listing photos. Your print file is for production; in the listing, show the design on a mockup.

Should I add a video too?

You can. Etsy allows 2 videos per listing, each up to 15 seconds, and they play without sound. A short turn of the product or a close-up of the fabric is enough.

Start on the free plan and build your first listing from the mockup library, without ever holding the product.
