A group listing turns a set of related designs, one per tee, into a single Etsy listing instead of one listing per design. In Alomations, Aloma, the AI assistant, builds it for you: you describe the set, it shows the plan and its credit cost, and the set reaches your shop as one listing.
This is for sellers who design in collections: twelve zodiac signs, a run of profession shirts, a family set with a design per person. A set like that raises a real question on Etsy, namely whether the designs should share one listing or each get their own, and the honest answer depends on how buyers search for them. This article covers both sides, then shows how group listings work in Alomations.
When one listing beats separate listings
A group listing works best when the designs are siblings: the same idea, layout and buyer, with one element that changes. Think of a zodiac set where each tee carries a different sign, or a "Class of" design in several colourways of wording. The buyer arrives with one search and wants to pick their version.
One search, one answer. If every design would be found by the same phrase, separate listings mostly compete with each other for it. One listing answers that search and lets the buyer choose inside it.
Sales and reviews gather in one place. Sales, favourites and reviews collect on a single listing instead of spreading thinly over a dozen near-copies.
Fewer listing fees on unsold designs. Etsy charges $0.20 per listing, and a listing expires after 4 months unless renewed for another $0.20. Twelve separate listings cost $2.40 to publish and the same again at each renewal, while one listing costs $0.20. When it sells, Etsy still charges $0.20 per each additional quantity, so the saving is on the designs that do not sell.
A tidier shop. Etsy allows up to 20 custom sections and a listing sits in only one of them, so a set held in one listing keeps a section from filling with look-alikes.
Our article on designing a collection instead of single designs covers how to plan sets that hold together like this.
When separate listings work better
Split the set when the designs answer different searches. A nurse design and a teacher design may share a layout, but their buyers type different words, and one listing has only one title and 13 tags to cover them. The same goes for a design that clearly outsells the rest: give it its own listing so its title and first photo can lead.
Separate listings also make sense when only some designs carry personalization, or when the designs belong to different occasions. If you are weighing the same choice for colours, our guide to one listing with many colours or separate listings uses the same reasoning, and how Etsy treats duplicate and near-identical listings explains why a dozen near-copies is rarely the answer either.
Group listing or separate listings at a glance
| Question | One group listing | Separate listings |
|---|---|---|
| Search phrases covered | One shared title and 13 tags | A title and 13 tags per design |
| First photo in search | One thumbnail for the whole set | Each design gets its own thumbnail |
| Listing fee to publish | $0.20 for the listing | $0.20 for each listing |
| Sales and reviews | Gather on one listing | Spread across the listings |
| Best for | Sibling designs that answer one search | Designs aimed at different buyers |
Etsy limits to check before you group
A set has to fit inside one listing's limits, so check these before you start.
Photos. Etsy allows up to 20 photos and 2 videos per listing, per its listing guide. A set of twelve designs needs one clear photo per design, plus room for a size chart and a close-up.
Choices. When buyers pick a design from a set, Etsy's usual tool is a variation. Listings can now have up to 3 variation types, like size, color, and style. With 3 types a listing can have up to 2,500 option combinations, but unique prices, SKUs and quantities work for only up to 400 of them. Twelve designs in 8 sizes and 5 colours make 480 combinations, so check whether you need size-based prices before you plan a set that large.
Photos per option. Etsy notes that if you have more than 20 options, you can only add photos for 20 of these options.
Names, not numbers. Label each design so a buyer knows what they ordered. "Design 7" tells nobody anything, while "Leo" or "Night Shift Nurse" does.
Buyers cannot filter search results by custom variations either, which is one more reason to keep the shared phrase strong in the title and tags.
How Aloma builds a group listing
Aloma is the AI assistant in Alomations. It reads your connected Etsy shop and makes listings for you, and a group listing is one of the things it can make: a set of designs, one per tee, as one listing.
Open Aloma from the top bar, or press Cmd+K and choose "Ask Aloma".
Describe the set: the theme, who it is for, the product and that you want it as one listing. For example: "twelve zodiac sign tees in one retro look, as a single listing".
Aloma finds the ideas and shows you the plan and its credit cost before anything is made.
If you want to see the look first, it can make two samples before the rest.
It pauses whenever a choice is yours instead of guessing, then lists the rest. Anything it does not make returns to your balance.
Before you confirm, read how the plan presents the designs, and change the set if two of them would serve different searches better as separate listings.
The listing itself comes out of the same machinery as every Alomations run. The designs come back print-ready at 12 inches and 300 DPI, as transparent PNGs with SVGs alongside, and the mockups are rendered for you. The run writes a buyer-intent title within Etsy's 140 characters, all 13 tags and a description, applies your template (prices, sizes, colours, shipping, return and processing profiles) and publishes to Etsy live, or as a draft if you prefer to look first. Our article on Aloma collections walks through a full collection from description to listings.
Aloma helps with the decision itself too. Ask it what sells best in your shop and what those listings share, and use the answer to judge whether buyers come for a theme (a case for grouping) or for one specific design (a case for its own listing). When you want the opposite of a group listing, Bulk Automate turns each selected design into its own listing, live, as drafts or dripped a few a day.
Frequently asked questions
Can one Etsy listing hold several designs?
Yes. Buyers need a clear way to choose, which on Etsy usually means a variation, and each design should carry a name rather than a number. Keep the set within Etsy's photo and variation limits.
Will a group listing be found for every design in it?
It can only match the phrases in its one title, its 13 tags and its attributes. Designs that need their own search phrases deserve their own listings.
What does a group listing cost in credits?
Aloma shows the plan and its credit cost before it makes anything, and anything it does not make returns to your balance. For reference, a single full listing costs about 10 credits from an AI-generated design and about 4 from an uploaded or reused one.
Should a design set always become one listing?
No. Group sibling designs that answer the same search, and give designs aimed at different buyers, occasions or personalization their own listings.
