Crewneck, V-neck or tank top on Etsy?

Most print-on-demand shops should list crewnecks first and add V-necks or tanks only where a niche asks for them. Here is how each cut changes the buyer, the design and the listing.

For most Etsy print-on-demand shops, the crewneck tee is the cut to list first, because it suits almost every niche and almost every gift buyer. Add V-necks or a tank top POD line only where a niche clearly calls for them, and give each extra cut its own listings or a clearly labeled Style option instead of putting every design on every shape.

This guide is for sellers planning their first apparel range, and for shops that already sell crewnecks and wonder whether a second cut will add sales or just add work. Every extra cut means more mockups, more variations and more chances to show a buyer the wrong product, so the decision is worth making on purpose.

How the three cuts differ

The neckline and the sleeves change three things at once: who the shirt looks right on, where the design can sit, and when people want to wear it.

  • Crewneck. A round collar that sits close to the base of the neck. It is the default unisex tee, so it reads as casual, safe and giftable, and the front gives you the most room for a centered design.

  • V-neck. The collar dips into a V at the front. It looks a little more fitted and dressed, and it appeals to people who want an everyday tee that feels less boxy. The dip takes space from the top of the print area, so the design has to start lower.

  • Tank top. No sleeves, wide armholes and usually a narrower body. It belongs to heat, training and holidays. The printable front is narrower than on a tee, so wide designs need rethinking.

Which niches want each style

Crewnecks carry the gift niches: family and birthday shirts, teacher and profession designs, humor, holidays, pets and hobbies. A buyer shopping for someone else rarely knows that person's favourite neckline, and the crewneck is the shape least likely to be wrong.

A tank top earns its place when the occasion is physical or sunny. Gym slogans, race-day and running club designs, beach vacations, cruises, bachelorette weekends and summer festivals are its natural homes, and our list of gym and fitness shirt ideas shows the kind of designs that suit it. If a design would look odd at a workout or on a boardwalk, it probably does not need a tank version.

V-necks suit niches where people buy for themselves and care about fit: everyday statement tees, faith and inspiration designs, some workwear-adjacent themes. Treat the V-neck as a fit preference that part of your audience has, not as a separate niche.

Adjusting the design for each neckline

The file you made for a crewneck is a starting point for the other two cuts, not a finished file.

  • For a V-neck, move the design down so its top edge clears the bottom of the V with room to spare. Our guide to where to place a design below the collar explains the reasoning. On a V-neck, measure from the point of the V, not from the shoulder seam.

  • For a tank top, prefer tall or compact compositions over long horizontal lines of text. Stacked words and badge shapes sit well on a narrow front. Make sure nothing important falls where the fabric curves toward the armholes.

  • For all three, check the result on a mockup of the actual cut. A crewneck photo on a tank top listing shows the buyer something they will not receive.

That last point is about more than looks. Etsy Purchase Protection does not cover orders where "The item doesn't match the listing description." A tank sold with crewneck photos is exactly that kind of mismatch.

How many styles to list without crowding your shop

Each new cut multiplies the work. Sizes times colours times cuts grows quickly, and every combination needs a price and, ideally, a photo.

Etsy now lets one listing hold up to three variation types. Its September 2026 update describes them as "Add up to three distinct variations, like size, color, and style", so a Style option for crewneck, V-neck and tank is possible. Know the limits before you build one: listings with 3 variation types can have up to 2,500 option combinations, you can add photos for only 20 options, and buyers cannot filter search results by custom variations.

The bigger reason to think twice is search. A shopper searching for a workout tank is better served by a listing that says tank top at the start of its title, which is what Etsy advises: "Clearly describe your item at the beginning of the item title." A crewneck listing with a tank option tucked inside cannot do that.

A practical rule set:

  1. List every design on a crewneck first.

  2. Add a separate tank top listing only for designs that belong to a warm-weather or fitness occasion.

  3. Add a V-neck when your own stats or buyer messages show demand, and consider it as a Style option on the crewneck listing, since the buyer is usually the same person.

  4. Review after a season and drop the cut that does not earn its upkeep.

If you are weighing the same question for colours, our article on one listing with many colours or separate listings uses the same logic.

Describe fabric and fit honestly

Different cuts often come from different blanks, and blanks differ in weight and feel. On the crewneck side, the Gildan 5000 spec sheet lists a "5.3-ounce, 100% US cotton" tee, while Bella+Canvas describes the 3001 as "100% Airlume combed and ring-spun cotton, 32 singles, 4.2 oz." Buyers feel that difference, so name the fabric in the description and in the materials attribute.

Fit matters even more with V-necks and tanks, which are often cut as women's or relaxed fits. Say clearly whether a style uses unisex or women's sizing, and add a size chart. Our guide to unisex vs women's sizing shows how to explain it without confusing buyers.

How Alomations fits in

The tee blanks in the Alomations catalog, such as Gildan 5000 and 64000, Bella+Canvas 3001 and Comfort Colors 1717, are classic crewnecks, and the catalog also carries the women's Bella+Canvas 6400, the long-sleeve Gildan 5400 and performance tees. Apparel is printed with DTF, and production for US orders is in the US. Check the catalog for the styles listed today before you plan a V-neck or tank range. For a cut you source elsewhere, you can still print and ship those orders yourself.

Once you pick a crewneck blank, a template holds the product, sizes, colours, materials and shipping, so each new design becomes a finished listing in one run. Listing accuracy checks keep the fabric claims in the copy matched to the template's materials, and a long-sleeve shirt is never called a "tee". The how it works page walks through a run.

Frequently asked questions

Should a new Etsy shop sell tank tops?

Only if your niche has a warm-weather or fitness angle. Start with crewnecks, and add tanks for the designs where a tank is the natural thing to wear.

Can crewnecks and tank tops share one listing?

Yes, through a Style variation, since Etsy allows up to three variation types. Separate listings usually work better for tanks, because the title and the first photo can say tank top from the start.

Do V-necks need a different print file?

Often the same artwork works, but its placement changes. Move it lower so it clears the V, and check it on a V-neck mockup before you list.

Which crewneck blank should I start with?

That depends on the feel and price you want. Our comparison of Gildan 5000 and Bella+Canvas 3001 walks through the trade-offs.
