Make the round ceramic ornament your default, because a circle fits names, years, photos and most Christmas designs, and add the heart for designs whose message the shape strengthens: couples, weddings, new babies, pets and remembrance. Whichever you choose, aim to have ornament listings live by early November, well before Black Friday on November 27, 2026.
This is for print-on-demand sellers adding a ceramic ornament to their Etsy shop for the Christmas season. Ornaments are small, giftable and easy to personalise, so the same idea that sells on a shirt can become a keepsake that goes back on the tree every year. If you are still choosing what to sell this season, our guide to what to sell on Etsy for Christmas gives the wider picture.
How the two shapes differ
The round ornament
A circle gives you an even design space with a natural centre. Centred layouts fit without effort: a name across the middle, a year below, a small illustration above. Text can follow the edge in an arc, which suits family names and "first Christmas" designs.
The round shape is also forgiving with photos, because a circular crop around a face or a pet keeps the subject whole. Many designs you already sell as badges, mug prints or chest prints can be adapted to a circle with little rework.
The heart ornament
A heart has two lobes at the top and narrows to a point at the bottom, so the space that really works is the wide band across its upper middle. That makes it less flexible: a round design squeezed into a heart loses its edges, and longer text runs out of room as the shape narrows.
What the heart gives back is meaning. The shape says love before the buyer reads a word, which is why it suits a couple's first Christmas, a wedding year, a new baby, a pet and memorial ornaments.
Designing for the print area
A few rules keep ornament designs clean:
Get the exact print template for each shape from your production partner and design to it. Never guess the print area from a product photo.
Keep names, faces and dates away from the edge and clear of the hanging hole at the top.
Plan for the white of the ornament. Ornaments are decorated by sublimation, with dyes applied to a coated surface using heat and pressure (print methods), so the light surface shows wherever your design is white or empty.
Use full-resolution files. 300 DPI is the usual recommendation for PNG print files (print file guide).
Size text for the tree. An ornament is read from arm's length or across a room, so one name in a bold, readable font beats a sentence in a delicate script.
Our explainer on sublimation printing covers why dye-based colour behaves differently from shirt printing.
Personalization: what to ask the buyer
Etsy gives you up to 5 personalization fields per listing, as a text box, a list of options or a file upload (Etsy personalization). You set the character limit for a text box, anywhere from 1 to 1,024 characters, and a list of options can hold up to 30 choices. A listing can have one upload field, through which buyers can send up to 10 files. Each field can be required or optional, and optional text fields can carry an add-on price.
What to ask for, by shape:
Round family ornament: the names in one text box, plus the year as its own field.
Round photo ornament: one upload field for the photo, plus a name or date.
Heart couple or wedding ornament: two first names and a date.
Heart pet or memorial ornament: one name and, if you offer it, a photo upload.
Set each character limit from the longest name your layout can hold, tested in the actual design, not from Etsy's maximum. Our guide to designing for short and long names shows how to test it. Keep the year as a field rather than printing it into the design, so the same listing stays usable next season.
Round or heart at a glance
| Question | Round ornament | Heart ornament |
|---|---|---|
| Design space | Even circle with a natural centre | Wide upper band that narrows to a point |
| Text that fits | Names, years, short phrases, text on an arc | One or two short names and a date |
| Themes | Family, first Christmas, photos, most holiday designs | Couples, weddings, baby, pets, remembrance |
| Photo designs | Easy to crop around a face | Works when the subject sits high and centred |
| Reusing other designs | Many circle and badge designs adapt | Needs designs made for the shape |
| Where to start | Your default ornament | A second shape for chosen designs |
When ornament listings should be ready
The dates that shape the season in the US are Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 26, 2026 (US federal holidays), Black Friday on November 27, 2026 (Black Friday), Cyber Monday on November 30, 2026 (Cyber Monday) and Christmas on December 25.
Work back from them:
Finish designs and print files in September and October, so November is for listing and fixing, not designing.
Publish ornament listings by early November. Etsy says a new listing can take up to 48 hours to appear in search (Etsy listing guide), and a listing that is live before the Black Friday weekend has time to collect favourites.
Remember that personalized ornaments are made after the order. Processing time starts the day after purchase (Etsy processing times), then shipping comes on top.
Check your production partner's holiday cut-off dates and state your last order date for Christmas delivery in the listing. Our guide to Christmas shipping cut-offs for POD orders covers how to plan it.
After Christmas, keep designs that are not tied to the holiday live, such as wedding or new-home ornaments.
How Alomations handles ornaments
Both shapes are in the Alomations catalog: round and heart ceramic ornaments, with US orders produced in the US. The catalog lists a "from" price for each product, and shipping is quoted separately.
Personalizable designs do the personalization work. A design gets an editable field, such as a name or a date, so the listing reaches Etsy with personalization switched on, and the buyer's text is placed in the design when the order arrives. Orders come in with the design, the variant and the personalization text attached. Listing titles say Personalized when the design is personalized, and the sample name on your mockup stays out of the title, tags and description. For photo ornaments, a buyer photo slot holds the place for the buyer's photo, which is cropped around faces and detail when it arrives. The seller calendar lays out Christmas and the other shopping dates with the weeks to design, publish and sell, and sends a notice the day each window opens. When you are ready to photograph the result, see ornament mockups for Christmas listings.
Frequently asked questions
Do ceramic ornaments break in shipping?
Ceramic can break, so packaging matters more than for a shirt: order a sample and see how it is packed. If one arrives damaged, Etsy Purchase Protection covers an item that arrived damaged for the first instance per calendar year, up to $250 of the refund, when the order meets its conditions (Etsy Purchase Protection).
Should the year be printed into the design?
Make it a personalization field instead. A buyer can then order a "first Christmas" ornament for any year, and the listing stays useful next season without a new design.
Can one listing offer both shapes?
Yes, shape can be a variation, and Etsy lets you add photos for up to 20 options in a variation (Etsy variations). Combine shapes only when the design works on both. Otherwise list the heart version on its own, with its own photos.
How many personalization fields should I use?
As few as the design needs. Etsy allows up to 5, but every extra field is another chance for a buyer to type something your layout cannot hold.
You can connect your shop and make your first ornament listings on the Alomations free plan, with no card needed.
