Photoshop mockups give you the most control over every detail of the image, while online mockup generators give you speed and a much gentler learning curve. For a few hero shots Photoshop is hard to beat, but once you list many designs in many colours, the route that renders mockups in bulk usually saves the most time.
This comparison is for Etsy sellers deciding where their hours go. Mockups are often the first thing a buyer sees, and Etsy lets you add up to 20 photos and 2 videos to each listing, so the way you make them decides how much of your week goes into images instead of new designs.
How each route works
Photoshop smart object mockups
A Photoshop mockup is a layered PSD file built around a smart object. You open the smart object, paste your design, save, and the design appears on the product with the warping, shading and blend settings the creator built into the file. Good files use displacement maps so the print follows the folds. You then export a JPG for Etsy. Our explainer on what a smart object mockup is walks through the layers.
Online mockup generators
An online generator runs in the browser. You upload a transparent PNG, pick a product photo from the site's library, adjust size and position, and download the result. Some tools only lay the design flat over the photo, others render folds and lighting. What you can make is limited to the templates the site offers.
Control: who decides how the image looks
Photoshop wins on control. You can change the lighting, retouch a wrinkle, adjust how much fabric texture shows through the ink, combine several products in one scene and work from your own photography. If you need an exact look for a brand, no other route gives you that freedom.
Online generators trade control for simplicity. You usually set placement, scale and garment colour, and the tool decides the rest. That is fine when its rendering is good and a problem when it is not: a print that floats on top of the fabric with no shading is one of the mockup mistakes that make listings look fake.
Speed: per image and per listing
In Photoshop, each image is a manual cycle unless you record actions or write scripts: open, replace, save, export. The files are large and can slow an older computer. A generator usually takes a fraction of that time per image, since placement and download are a few clicks.
The real speed question is multiplication. One design shown in five colours and three angles is fifteen images, and a shop that adds designs every week multiplies that again. Both routes feel fast for one image. Only one of them stays fast when every design needs a full set of colours.
Cost: software, files and time
Photoshop means a software subscription, plus mockup files you buy or download, plus a computer that opens large PSDs comfortably. Good mockup files are often sold under licences with conditions, so read them before a file goes into a listing. Our guide to mockup licences explains what to look for.
Online generators often have a free tier with limits, such as watermarks, lower resolution or fewer templates, and paid tiers above that. Our look at free t-shirt mockup generators and their limits covers those trade-offs. On either route, your time is the largest cost, and it grows with every design.
Scaling to many designs and colours
Scaling is where the two routes split. Photoshop can batch through actions, scripts and data sets, but setting that up takes skill and breaks when a file changes. Many generators are built around one design at a time, though some offer bulk tools.
Whatever you use, the output has to meet Etsy's photo guidance. Etsy recommends listing photos "have a width and height of at least 2000 pixels or more", says "The first photo in a listing should be horizontal (landscape) or square", and warns that images larger than 1MB may not finish uploading on a slow connection. Etsy's search visibility checks also look for a high-resolution primary photo that shows one finished product, clear and well lit, with no collage.
| Factor | Photoshop mockups | Online mockup generators |
|---|---|---|
| Control over the result | Full: lighting, texture, retouching, scenes | Placement, size and colour, the tool decides the rest |
| Speed per image | Slow by hand, fast only with actions or scripts | Fast, a few clicks per image |
| Upfront cost | Software subscription and bought mockup files | Often a free tier, paid tiers for more |
| Learning curve | Steep for displacement maps and batching | Low |
| Your own product photos | Yes, if you build the PSD yourself | Only if the tool accepts uploads |
| Many designs in many colours | Possible with scripting skill | Depends on whether the tool has bulk tools |
| Best for | Hero images and a signature look | Quick image sets for new listings |
A third route: mockups rendered inside the listing run
Alomations takes mockups out of a separate step. Its smart mockups render your design onto product photos with real fabric folds, shading and light, and they are free to use. Objects in front of the design, such as a hand or a strap, stay in front, a front mockup can carry its own chest-logo spot, a background picker covers flat-lay shots, and a zoom control lets a product shot from far back fill more of the image. Before the run you can preview every colour and every side, and the mockups are downloadable if you want them elsewhere. A built-in mockup library of ready product photos covers the catalog products, so you can list without owning a photo.
If you already have photos you like, including ones you shot yourself, the own mockup library on paid plans lets you upload them, set the print area once and reuse them in every run, and Mockup Preview changes the shirt colour of your own photo live. Because the listing run renders the mockups for each design, and Bulk Automate turns each selected design into its own listing, a full set of colours does not have to be made image by image. Smart mockups count toward Etsy's 20 images per listing. The features page shows how mockups fit into a full listing run.
Frequently asked questions
Are Photoshop mockups better quality than online ones?
Not by default. Quality comes from the base photo, the lighting and how the design follows the fabric. A well-built PSD and a good renderer can both look real, and a poor one on either route looks fake.
Do I need Photoshop to sell on Etsy?
No. Etsy's search checks look for clear, well-lit, high-resolution photos of the finished product. Any route that produces those images is enough.
Can I use any mockup file I find online?
Only if its licence allows commercial use in product listings. Read the terms before you use a file, and keep a copy of the licence with the file.
How many mockups should one listing have?
Etsy allows up to 20 photos and 2 videos per listing. You do not need to fill every slot: show each colour and angle a buyer would ask about, and lead with the clearest one.
You can try smart mockups on your own designs with the Alomations free plan, no card required.
