Offering plus sizes on Etsy: 2XL to 5XL

Extended sizes let group and gift buyers order from you, with no stock to hold. Here is how 2XL to 5XL change your costs, how to price them and how to describe the fit.

Adding 2XL to 5XL to your Etsy shirts lets buyers who wear larger sizes order your design instead of leaving to look elsewhere, and in print on demand it adds no stock risk because each shirt is printed only after it sells. What changes is the money and the wording: larger sizes usually cost more to produce, so they need their own prices, and the listing has to describe the fit clearly enough that buyers pick the right size the first time.

This is for shirt, sweatshirt and hoodie sellers whose size menu stops at XL out of habit. Many blanks go further: Bella+Canvas lists its 3001 tee in unisex sizes XS to 5XL. If a design you sell is printed on that blank, the bigger sizes may be one setting away.

Why extended sizes are worth listing

Group orders are the clearest reason. A family reunion, a bachelorette weekend or a team order is usually placed by one person for everyone, and if one member needs a 4XL and your listing stops at XL, the whole order can go to a shop that has it. The same goes for matching sets, which we cover in family matching shirts.

Gift buyers matter too. Someone buying for a partner or a parent knows the size they need and will not settle for one that does not fit.

There is no inventory to carry. In print on demand you never hold a 5XL on a shelf, so the only cost of offering it is the time it takes to set prices and write the size details once.

How larger sizes change your costs

The blank costs more. Larger garments use more fabric, blank prices often step up at 2XL, and production partners pass that on as a higher item price for those sizes. A catalog "from" price is the lowest price for that product, so read the price of every size you plan to offer before you set yours.

Shipping can cost more. A 5XL hoodie weighs more than a small one. On Etsy a listing can only be connected to one shipping profile, so the profile has to work for the heaviest size in that listing, not the average one. More on this in Etsy shipping profiles for print on demand.

The print can look smaller. Some providers print the same design size across a range of sizes. One provider's help page says designs "are not scaled up for sizes larger than L", so the same print covers less of a 4XL than of an L. Another uses a larger front print area on the Bella+Canvas 3001 in sizes L to 5XL. Print areas vary by provider and product, so check yours.

Fees follow the price. Etsy's transaction fee is 6.5% of the total order amount, so a higher price for a 4XL also carries a slightly higher fee.

Pricing 2XL to 5XL without losing margin

Etsy lets price vary by variation when you switch it on, and you can set unique prices for up to 400 option combinations. That gives you three workable approaches.

ApproachHow it worksWorks well whenWatch out for
One price for every sizeS to 5XL all sell at the same priceThe cost gap between sizes is smallThin or lost margin on 3XL to 5XL

Price steps are a practical middle ground. Each step should cover the higher item cost, any extra shipping and the fees on the higher price, as shown in the margin math for print on demand. A one-price listing is a fair choice too, as long as you calculate it from the most expensive size rather than the cheapest.

Describing fit so buyers order the right size

A clear size chart does more than any sentence. Give chest width and body length for every size, in inches and centimetres, and follow the steps in how to build a size chart.

  • Name the cut. Say whether the shirt is a unisex or a women's fit, because a women's 2XL and a unisex 2XL are not the same garment. Unisex vs women's sizing explains how to phrase it.

  • Say the range early. Etsy advises that a buyer should know exactly what you sell from the first sentence, so mention sizes S to 5XL near the top of the description.

  • Use respectful words. "Sizes up to 5XL", "extended sizes" and "plus size" are plain and neutral. Leave body jokes out of designs and copy.

  • Mention the print size. If your provider keeps one print size across sizes, say so, so a 5XL buyer is not surprised.

  • Use Etsy's own size option. Etsy notes that buyers cannot filter search results by custom variations, so pick the standard size variation rather than inventing your own.

For tags, Etsy allows 13 tags of up to 20 characters each. "plus size shirt" fits in 15 characters, and "plus size gift" works for gift listings.

How Alomations sets up extended sizes

Variation profiles hold a size and colour set, such as S to 5XL in your chosen colours, that you save once and reuse in every template. Saved variation profiles come with the paid plans. The template carries the rest: product and category, materials, SKUs, the shipping, return and processing profiles, and the price for each size. Arranging prices across sizes is part of the template, so your price steps are set once, and every listing run that uses the template publishes the full range with the right prices.

Our catalog lists each product with a "from" price, for example the Bella+Canvas 3001 from $8.40 and the Gildan 5000 from $6.89, read on October 17, 2026. Those are starting prices, so check each size you add. When an order arrives, the orders screen shows the item cost and shipping separately before you pay, so a 4XL order shows exactly what it costs you. The run also keeps fabric claims in the copy in line with the template's materials.

Frequently asked questions

Should 2XL to 5XL cost more than S to XL?

Usually, yes, when your item cost for those sizes is higher. Price steps by size group are the simplest way to cover the difference.

Do I need a separate listing for plus sizes?

No. One listing with sizes up to 5XL keeps reviews and favourites together. Make a separate listing only when the product itself changes, such as a different blank or cut.

Will my design look smaller on a 5XL?

It can, if your provider prints one size across the range. Say so in the description and, if you have one, show a mockup on a larger size.

Which tags help buyers find extended sizes?

Short, plain phrases such as "plus size shirt" or "plus size gift" fit within Etsy's 20-character limit. Add the size range to the description as well.
