Etsy coupon codes, which Etsy calls promo codes, come in three types: a percentage off, a fixed amount off, or free standard shipping. As a rule of thumb, a percentage suits broad promotions, a fixed amount suits one hesitant purchase, and free shipping suits buyers who walk away when they see the shipping line at checkout.
This guide is for Etsy sellers, print-on-demand sellers in particular, who want to run a discount on purpose rather than out of habit. Every POD sale already carries a production cost, shipping and Etsy fees, so the type of code you pick decides whether a promotion brings in profitable orders or just cheaper ones.
The three types of Etsy coupon code
Etsy's help page on sales and promo codes lists what a code can do: take a percentage off, take a fixed amount off, or give free standard shipping (Etsy Help: sales and coupons). You can also cap how many times a code can be used across all buyers, the simplest way to stop a public code from travelling further than you planned.
Percentage off
Etsy lets you offer any whole-number percentage between 5% and 75% off the list price (Etsy Help: sales and coupons). The discount grows with the cart: 20% off a $40 item is $8, while the same code takes $16 from an $80 cart. It suits shop-wide moments, but know your thinnest margin before you choose the number.
Fixed amount off
A fixed amount takes the same money off whatever the buyer spends. "$5 off" reads as real money on a hoodie or a canvas print, and it never grows past the figure you chose. The risk runs the other way: on your cheapest item, the same $5 can take most of what you keep. A fixed code works best when your prices sit close together, or when the code is meant for one higher-priced product.
Free standard shipping
A free-shipping code removes the shipping charge at checkout. For a print-on-demand seller it is never actually free: your production partner still charges you for shipping, so the code costs you that full amount on every order that uses it. It suits buyers who hesitate at the final total, including people who left items in their cart.
Which code suits which shop situation
| Shop situation | Code or tool | Why it fits | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Launching a new collection to your followers | Percentage off | Easy to explain in one post | Large carts get a large discount too |
| One higher-priced item buyers hesitate over | Fixed amount off | A round figure feels concrete | The same figure on a cheap item eats the margin |
| Buyers drop off at the final total | Free standard shipping | Removes the last surprise at checkout | You still pay the partner's shipping |
| Matching items, such as family shirts | Discounted bundle | Rewards adding a second and third item | A bundle can include up to 3 listings |
| Thanking a past buyer | Thank-you offer | Arrives after the order, while goodwill is high | Expires 1 year after sending |
| A code handed to a creator or a group | Any type, with a use limit | Caps how far the code can travel | Set the maximum uses before you share it |
Sales and the offers Etsy sends for you
A promo code is only one of Etsy's discount tools. A sale gives a percentage off or free standard shipping without the buyer typing a code, and a discounted bundle can include up to 3 listings (Etsy Help: sales and coupons). For a shop-wide event, a sale is easier on buyers than a code to remember, as our guide to running sales on Etsy without losing money explains.
Etsy can also send targeted offers for you. Abandoned-cart emails go out after an item has sat in a cart for more than 2 hours, and abandoned-cart and favorited-item offers expire 60 days after you create them. Thank-you offers expire 1 year after they are sent (same source). Because they reach people who already showed interest, a modest discount often does the job. See sending offers to cart abandoners and favoriters for the setup.
Do the margin math before you share a code
A discount comes straight out of your margin, because your product cost does not fall when your price does. Most Etsy fees follow the order total: the transaction fee is 6.5% of the total order amount, including shipping and gift wrap when you charge for them (Etsy Help: fees). Payment processing is a set rate plus a percentage, and it depends on the country of your bank account: 3% + 0.25 USD in the United States and 6.5% + 14 TRY in Türkiye, for example (Etsy Help: payment processing fees). Sellers in some countries also pay a regulatory operating fee on the item price and shipping, 1.67% in Türkiye (Etsy Help: regulatory operating fee).
Two parts do not shrink with a discount: the $0.20 listing fee and the set rate inside the processing fee. And if a discounted order came through Offsite Ads, Etsy charges 15% of the order total, or 12% for shops that made at least $10,000 on Etsy in the past 365 days (Etsy Help: fees).
A quick check works for any code type:
Write down what you keep on your lowest-priced item at full price.
Subtract the discount the code gives on that item.
If the result is close to zero, lower the discount or switch to a type that caps what you give away, such as a fixed amount.

Share codes as links to earn Share & Save
Etsy's Share & Save program refunds enrolled sellers 4% of the eligible order total when buyers arrive through the seller's own links, and promo code links count as qualifying links (Etsy Help: Share & Save). The same page says that from October 20 to January 4, enrolled sellers earn 6.5% back on eligible orders.
The order has to be placed within 30 days of the click, and the credit goes to the last link the buyer clicked. Links sent in Etsy Messages or placed in listing descriptions do not count, and neither does an order whose last click was an Offsite Ad. So share the promo code link itself on your social accounts, rather than only typing the code into a caption. Black Friday falls on November 27, 2026 and Cyber Monday on November 30, 2026, so decide now which code goes where. Our Black Friday and Cyber Monday guide for POD sellers has the timeline.
How Alomations shows what a discount cost you
A coupon decision is only as good as the numbers behind it. In Alomations, the profit view shows the profit you kept after Etsy fees and product cost on fulfilled orders, so after a promotion you can see what the discounted orders actually left you instead of judging the campaign by order count alone. The profit view comes with the paid plans.
When you fulfill through our production partners, the orders screen shows the item cost and the shipping separately before you pay from your balance. That shipping line is exactly what a free-shipping code asks you to absorb.
Frequently asked questions
Can an Etsy coupon take more than 75% off?
No. A percentage code can be any whole number from 5% to 75% off the list price.
Can I limit how many times a coupon is used?
Yes. Etsy lets you set a maximum number of uses across all buyers, which is worth doing on any code you share in public.
Is a free-shipping coupon free for a print-on-demand seller?
No. Your production partner still charges for shipping, so every order that uses the code costs you that amount.
Do Etsy fees go down when I offer a discount?
The percentage-based fees follow the order total, so they are lower on a discounted order. The $0.20 listing fee and the set rate of the processing fee stay the same.
