Embroidery is worth it on Etsy when the design is simple (a few solid colours, bold shapes, text that is not tiny) and the product is one where buyers expect a stitched, premium look, such as caps, sweatshirts and left-chest logos. For detailed, colourful or photographic artwork, a print is the better choice, because thread cannot reproduce gradients or fine detail.
This is for print-on-demand sellers wondering whether to add an embroidered line next to their printed tees. Embroidery changes what you can design, what each item costs and how you describe it in the listing, so the decision is worth making on purpose rather than on impulse.
How embroidery differs from printing
Printing puts ink or a transfer onto the fabric. Embroidery is "designs stitched onto garments using thread and a needle", which the same provider page credits with "excellent durability and a premium look." The trade-off sits on the same page: "the color options are limited to the available thread shades."
A DTF transfer, by contrast, can print on cotton, polyester, nylon, and blends alike in full colour, and its white ink layer lets it work on any fabric colour. If your design depends on shading, blends or many colours, a print reproduces it and thread does not. Our explainer on what DTF printing is and how it works covers the print side in more detail.
The design limits: colours, text and lines
Embroidery providers publish their own design rules, and the rules differ. Treat the figures below as examples from two providers, not universal limits.
Thread colours: one provider allows "up to 6 thread colors per design". Another offers 15 thread colours with up to 6 per design (design file guidelines).
Gradients and shading: colour blends and subtle shading "can't be stitched accurately."
Small text and thin lines: the same provider sets a minimum text height of 0.25 inch (about 6.35 mm) and a minimum line thickness of 0.05 inch (about 1.27 mm) (embroidery guidelines).
In practice this rules out much of what sells as a printed tee: distressed textures, watercolour, photos and long quotes in small script. It rewards monograms, one-word designs, small icons and outlined lettering. If you are unsure whether your text is too small, our guide to thin lines and small text shows the same problem from the print side, where the limits are looser.
What embroidery costs you
Embroidery adds a setup step that printing does not have. Before a design can be stitched, it has to be digitized, which means converting the artwork into a stitch file. One provider charges a $6.50 (EUR 5.75) standard digitization fee, and the amount varies by provider. DTG and DTF, by comparison, run "with no setup fees or minimum orders."
That fee changes the maths for a print-on-demand shop that lists many designs and expects most of them to sell a few times each. A one-off setup cost per design is easy to absorb on a bestseller and hard to recover on a design that sells once. Add it to your product cost when you work through the margin math for print on demand, and decide which designs have earned it.
Print or embroidery at a glance
| Question | Printed (DTF) | Embroidered |
|---|---|---|
| Colours | Full colour from the print file | Limited to thread shades, often up to 6 per design |
| Small text and fine lines | Easier, within print limits | Minimum text height around 0.25 inch at one provider |
| Setup per design | No setup fee | Digitizing, for example $6.50 at one provider |
| Best placements | Full front, back, large designs | Left chest, caps, small centred marks |
| Feel | Thin layer on top of the fabric | Raised thread with a premium look |
| Thin fabrics | A thin layer on top, low in breathability at one provider | Heavy stitching can make them curve or warp |
Products and niches that justify embroidery
Embroidery earns its cost where buyers already link stitching with quality and where a small, simple mark carries the design.
Caps and beanies: a stitched front logo or word is a familiar, natural look on headwear.
Sweatshirts and hoodies: heavier fabric carries stitching well, and small left-chest or centred words suit the cosy, minimal look.
Polos and workwear: small business logos and team names, often ordered for a whole group.
Monograms and initials: wedding parties, bridesmaids and personal gifts where a few letters are the design.
Minimal place-name or "established" designs: short text with one small icon.
Keep printing for funny quotes, detailed illustrations, photos, all-over colour and anything built around a gradient. A practical mix is to offer both: the printed version as the main line, and an embroidered version of the two or three designs simple enough to stitch.
One rule applies either way. If an outside company stitches your items, Etsy requires you to disclose that production partner on the relevant listings. Your mockups must also show the method you actually ship, because a buyer who sees stitching and receives a print has a fair complaint. Our article on production partners on Etsy walks through the disclosure step.
Where Alomations fits
Our catalog is printed, not stitched: apparel is printed with DTF, plus sublimation for products that need it, so embroidery is something you would source from a provider that offers it. Where Alomations helps is the printed line that usually sits next to an embroidered one. The catalog includes caps (Valucap and YP Classics), Gildan and Comfort Colors sweatshirts and performance polos, each with its "from" price on the page and shipping quoted separately.
A practical way to use both: test a design as a print first, and pay to digitize only the designs that prove they sell. Every design made in Alomations comes back print-ready at 12 inches and 300 DPI as a transparent PNG with an SVG alongside, so the printed version is ready the day you list it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I sell embroidered products on Etsy through a production partner?
Yes. Etsy allows production partners, including print-on-demand services, as long as the items are your original design, and you must disclose the partner on the relevant listings.
How many colours can an embroidered design have?
It depends on the provider. Both provider guides we read allow up to 6 thread colours per design.
Can I embroider a name for personalized orders?
Short names and initials suit embroidery well. Check the provider's minimum text height, and give Etsy's personalization text box a character limit that matches the space you have.
Is embroidery more durable than a print?
One provider describes embroidery as having excellent durability, and a provider estimates that DTF prints hold up for 50 to 100 washes before fading, cracking or peeling shows. Durability also depends on the garment and on care, so check samples.
