Designing for kids' products: size and readability

Smaller garments leave less room for a design. Here is how to adapt artwork, lettering and colours for youth, toddler and baby products so they still read clearly.

A kids shirt design has less room to work in, so it needs fewer elements, bigger shapes and short, bold lettering that still reads when the whole design gets smaller. Plan the artwork for the smallest size you sell, then check that it still looks deliberate on the largest.

This guide is for sellers adding youth, toddler or baby sizes to their shop, often for family matching sets, birthdays and back-to-school. The buyers are parents, grandparents and gift-givers, and they judge the shirt from a small thumbnail and then from across a room. A design that looks rich on an adult tee can turn into a blur on a toddler's chest.

How a smaller print area changes a design

Every print provider sets a print area per product, and smaller garments have less of it. Even among adult shirts, one provider that uses a 15 x 18 inch front area on select DTG tees notes that some smaller product sizes do not support this placement. Youth, toddler and baby garments are smaller again, so check each product's print area template before you design.

What shrinks first:

  • Line weight. A line that looked bold on an adult tee becomes a hairline once the design is scaled down. Our guide to thin lines and small text shows what survives printing.

  • Small text. Secondary lines, dates and taglines become unreadable before anything else does.

  • Gaps. Tight spaces between shapes close up, so the design reads as one dark mass.

  • Detail. Textures, small icons and busy backgrounds turn into noise.

The fix is not a smaller copy of the adult file. It is a kids version with fewer parts. Size the file to the real print dimensions, since one provider notes that a file should be sized to match the actual print dimensions so DPI is calculated correctly, with 300 DPI recommended for PNG files.

Adjusting one design across sizes

ProductRoom for the designWhat to change
Adult teeThe mostYour reference version, full detail
Youth teeLess than adultFewer words per line, thicker lines, larger gaps
Toddler teeLess than youthOne main image and one short line of text
Baby bodysuitThe least, across a small chestOne simple shape or one or two words, nothing fine
Family matching setMixed sizes in one orderKeep the same layout and palette, simplify the small sizes only

For family sets, the kids version should still look like the adult one at a glance: same colours, same headline word, same overall shape. Our guide to toddler and youth shirts covers the sizes themselves, and baby bodysuits as a print on demand product covers the smallest canvas.

Lettering that reads on a small shirt

  • Keep phrases short. A kids shirt carries a name, an age or a few words. Long jokes belong on adult shirts.

  • Choose sturdy letterforms. Rounded, bold sans serifs and chunky display fonts hold up. Thin scripts and condensed fonts fill in or break. See choosing readable fonts for t-shirt designs.

  • Make the main word the biggest thing. If the shirt says "Big Brother", those two words should dominate, not the decoration around them.

  • Mind method-specific minimums. For embroidery, one provider sets a minimum text height of 0.25 inch (about 6.35 mm) and a minimum line thickness of 0.05 inch. Printed designs can go finer, but a toddler shirt is a bad place to test the limit.

Run the thumbnail test too: shrink the design to the size of an Etsy search result and see whether you can still tell what it is. Our guide to designing so your art reads in an Etsy thumbnail walks through it.

Themes and colours that suit children's items

Themes. Animals, dinosaurs, vehicles, space, sea creatures, food with faces, a favourite sport (never a team's name or logo), ages and milestones ("Three Years Wild", "First Day of Kindergarten") and sibling announcements all work at small sizes because they can be drawn as one clear shape. Keep every character your own. Licensed cartoon characters, brand mascots and famous names are not yours to print, and Etsy warns that repeat reports of infringement may result in the loss of account privileges.

Colours. Bright, saturated palettes with strong contrast read best from a distance. Pastels suit baby items, but watch pale-on-pale: light yellow art on a white bodysuit almost disappears. Fewer colours also make each one larger and clearer at small sizes.

Feel. Children's clothes get handled, stretched and washed constantly. A DTF print sits as a thin, smooth layer you can feel on top of the fabric, and one provider notes that the breathability of DTF prints is relatively low. Large solid blocks across a small chest feel stiffer than open designs with gaps, so an outline drawing or a design with breathing room is often the kinder choice.

Products made for children can carry extra safety and labelling rules in some countries, so check Etsy's help pages or a qualified professional before you list them.

Making kids versions in the Design Editor

In the Alomations Design Editor, a kids version is a few edits away from the adult design rather than a new drawing. Keep the adult design and its kids version as separate design versions. Shorten or enlarge the lettering with the text tool (press T), use fit to canvas to fill the print area again after you remove elements, add an outline to lift thin art off a busy colour, and recolour a palette or one element when a pastel disappears on a light garment. Some looks in the style library return artwork and lettering as separate layers, so you can change "Big Sister" to "Little Sister" without touching the picture. You can also upload your own fonts for chunky lettering.

Every design comes back print-ready at 12 inches and 300 DPI, as a transparent PNG with an SVG alongside, with light and dark versions for pale and dark garments. The Alomations catalog includes women's, youth, toddler and baby sizes, and the Design Editor opens on the paid plans.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the same file for adult and kids shirts?

You can, but check how your provider handles smaller sizes, since one provider notes that some smaller sizes do not support its largest front placement. A separate kids version with fewer elements and thicker lines usually reads better.

What fonts work best on toddler shirts?

Bold, rounded sans serifs and chunky display fonts with open letter shapes. Avoid thin scripts and tightly condensed fonts, which fill in or break at small sizes.

Can I put cartoon characters on kids' shirts?

Only characters you created yourself. Etsy removes listings when a rights owner files a valid report, and repeat reports can cost you account privileges, so original designs are the safe route.

Which colours work best on baby items?

Pale garments with medium or dark art, or bright art with strong contrast. Pale art on a pale garment is the combination to avoid.
