For most Etsy mug listings, the 11 oz mug is the safe default: it is the classic coffee mug size, and because it is smaller it usually costs less to make and to ship. The 15 oz gives you a taller print area and a gift that feels more generous at a higher price, and you can offer both as a size option in one listing with its own price for each.
This is for print on demand sellers adding mugs next to their shirts, often with the gift season in mind. We look at which size to design for, which to list first, and how to keep buyers from being surprised by the size when the box arrives.
11 oz vs 15 oz side by side
Mug sizes are named by capacity in US fluid ounces, so 11 oz is about 325 ml and 15 oz about 444 ml. Both are usually white ceramic mugs, decorated by sublimation onto a coated surface (a provider's guide to print methods). Exact heights and print areas vary by manufacturer, so the table compares the two in relative terms.
| Factor | 11 oz | 15 oz |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | About 325 ml, a regular coffee | About 444 ml, a large coffee or tea |
| Print area | Smaller, suits a short phrase or one graphic | Taller, with room for longer text or a wide scene |
| Cost to produce | Usually lower | Usually higher, so compare both prices before you list |
| Shipping | Smaller, lighter box | Bigger, heavier box |
| Gift angle | Everyday desk mug, coworker and teacher gifts | Big-mug jokes, tea drinkers, a gift that feels generous |
| Photo needs | A hand or desk shot shows the size | A side-by-side with the 11 oz makes the difference obvious |
Print area: how much room each size gives your design
The 15 oz mug is taller, so its print area is taller too, and a design laid out for the 11 oz looks small on it unless you resize it. Long quotes, lists of names and wide illustrations need that extra height. A short phrase or a single small graphic often looks better on the 11 oz, where it fills the space instead of floating in it.
Mug designs are either printed on both sides of the handle or wrapped around the body. A two-sided layout means right- and left-handed drinkers both see the design, while a wrap suits patterns and panoramic scenes. Either way, keep important details away from the handle, because the printable area ends before it.
Use your provider's template for each size and prepare one file per size rather than stretching one file across both. The usual recommendation for PNG print files is 300 DPI (a provider's file guidelines). Sublimation dyes soak into the material rather than sitting on top (a provider's guide to print methods), so plan the design around the mug's own white: anything left transparent in your file shows as bare ceramic. Our guide to mug printing methods compares sublimation with UV printing.
Price and margin for each size
The bigger mug uses more ceramic and needs a bigger, heavier box, so expect it to cost you more to make and to ship. Price each size on its own numbers rather than adding the same markup to both. Etsy lets price, quantity, processing profile and SKU vary by variation when you switch that on (Etsy variations).
Remember that Etsy's 6.5% transaction fee applies to the total order amount, shipping included (Etsy fees), so a higher shipping charge on the 15 oz raises the fee as well. Offering both sizes as a variation in one listing lets the buyer pick a size without leaving the page, and our explainer on what a variation is on Etsy shows how to set one up.
Gift appeal: who buys which size
The 11 oz is the everyday mug: the one on an office desk, the coworker or teacher gift, the small add-on to a bigger order. Designs with a short joke, a name or a small illustration suit it well, and it is the classic size people mean when they say "coffee mug".
The 15 oz sells the idea of more: more coffee, more tea, a mug for someone who refills all day. It suits designs that joke about size or caffeine, long quotes, and family designs with a list of names. Personalized mugs work in both sizes, and Etsy lets you add up to 5 personalization fields per listing (Etsy personalization), but a long name or a list of grandchildren needs the taller mug.
How to show the size in your photos
A mug standing alone on a white background tells the buyer nothing about scale, and that is how size surprises happen.
Show it in a hand. A hand around the mug is the quickest way to read its size.
Put both sizes side by side. If you offer both, one photo of the two together answers the question before anyone asks it.
Use everyday objects. A laptop, a book or a bag of coffee next to the mug gives scale without a word.
Link a photo to each option. Etsy lets you add photos to variation options, for up to 20 of them (Etsy variations), so choosing 15 oz can show the 15 oz.
Say the size in words. Put the capacity in the title and in the first sentence of the description, because Etsy says "a person should be able to read the first sentence and know exactly what you're selling" (Etsy SEO tips).
Add a short video. Etsy allows up to 20 photos and 2 videos per listing (Etsy listing guide), and a few seconds of the mug turning in a hand shows both sides and the size at once.
Keep the main photo square or landscape, and Etsy recommends at least 2000 pixels in width and height (Etsy image guidelines). Our mug mockups guide covers the angles buyers expect to see.
Mugs in the Alomations catalog
Ceramic mugs are part of the Alomations catalog, alongside tumblers and water bottles, apparel, ornaments, tote bags and canvas prints. Every product on our catalog shows a "from" price, and shipping is quoted separately, so you can check the mug options and work out your margin before you list. Products that need it are printed with sublimation, and production for US orders is in the US.
Because they are catalog products, mugs come with ready product photos in the built-in mockup library, so you can list without buying and photographing a mug yourself. The sizes and prices you offer live in your template, which you build once and reuse in every run. If you later want a travel option next to your mugs, our look at tumblers and water bottles as POD products is the next step.
Frequently asked questions
Which mug size sells better on Etsy?
There is no single answer, because it depends on the design and on who is buying. Offering both as a variation and checking which size your orders lean towards is the practical way to find out for your own shop.
Can I offer 11 oz and 15 oz in one listing?
Yes. Add size as a variation and set a price for each option. Since September 2026, Etsy listings can have up to three variation types (Etsy updates), so size, colour and a third option can share one listing.
Do I need a different design file for each size?
Usually, yes. The 15 oz print area is taller, so a file sized for the 11 oz either looks small or gets stretched. Build each file on your provider's template for that size.
What tags work for a mug listing?
Name the size in at least one tag if buyers search for it, for example "15 oz mug", next to your recipient and occasion tags. Our Etsy tag examples for mugs, posters and other products has complete sets.
