Sweatshirt mockups for Etsy listings

A good sweatshirt listing shows the product straight on, up close and worn. Here are the angles, colours and seasonal scenes it needs, and how to show print size honestly.

A sweatshirt listing needs a mockup set that shows the product straight on from the front, the print up close, the sweatshirt being worn, and every colour you offer. Because heavy fabric can make a print look bigger or smaller than it really is, at least one image in the set should show print size against a reference.

This guide is for sellers who list tees and want to add sweatshirts for autumn and winter. A sweatshirt costs more than a tee, so buyers study the photos harder. Thick fabric folds, ribbed cuffs and hems gather, and a print sits on the fabric differently than it does on a tee, so habits that work for t-shirt mockups do not always carry over.

What Etsy's photo rules mean for sweatshirts

Etsy lets you add up to 20 photos and 2 videos to each listing (Etsy listing guide). Videos run up to 15 seconds and play without sound once uploaded (Etsy listing videos). For a heavy fabric, a short silent clip of the sweatshirt moving can say more about thickness than any still.

For image size, Etsy recommends at least 2000 pixels in width and height. The first photo needs at least 635 pixels "to avoid showing up lower in searches", and it should be landscape or square (Etsy image guidelines). Thumbnails are cropped to square, portrait and landscape, so leave enough space around the sweatshirt for it to stay clear in all three views. Since June 2026 you can preview thumbnails before publishing (Etsy updates).

Etsy's Search Visibility page also lists checks for the primary photo: high resolution, one finished product rather than a collage, and a clear, well-lit image (Etsy search visibility). That rules out a colour-swatch collage as the main image. It belongs later in the set.

Which angles you need

Each image in this starting set answers a different buyer question.

Whether the main photo should be a model or a flat lay depends on the product and the style, and we cover that trade-off in flat-lay vs model mockups. A crewneck needs no hood shot, so use that slot for a close-up of the collar and cuffs instead. If you also sell hoodies, see hoodie mockups: front, back and hood shots.

Colours: which ones, and how to show them

A photo for each colour option makes the choice easier for the buyer. Etsy lets you add photos to variation options, but "If you have more than 20 options, you can only add photos for 20 of these options" (Etsy variations). On a sweatshirt with a long colour list, decide early which colours get their own image.

Watch two things in colour images. First, each colour needs the right version of the design: dark lettering disappears on a dark sweatshirt, so it needs the light version. Second, the colour should look true. Etsy converts uploaded images to the sRGB colour profile (Etsy image guidelines), so preparing mockups in sRGB keeps the colour you see closer to what reaches the listing.

Seasonal settings: autumn, winter and the holidays

Sweatshirts are a seasonal product, and a seasonal scene tells the buyer at a glance which time of year a listing belongs to: autumn leaves, a warm drink, winter knits or holiday lights. Put that scene second or third in the set and keep the main photo clean, because the main photo's job is to show the product on its own in a small thumbnail.

Change the scene with the calendar. Halloween is on 31 October (Wikipedia), US Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, 2026 (OPM), and Christmas is on December 25 (Wikipedia). An autumn scene carries you through to around mid-November, and after that winter and holiday scenes take over. Swapping just the seasonal image is often enough, rather than reshooting the whole set. Our guide to seasonal mockups shows how.

Showing print size on a heavy fabric

Sweatshirt fabric is clearly thicker than a tee. The Gildan 18000 Europe spec sheet, for example, gives 280 g/m² (Gildan 18000 Europe spec sheet), against 180 g/m² for the Gildan 5000 tee (Gildan 5000 Europe spec sheet). Heavier fabric folds more deeply across the chest and arms, and the print bends with it, so it reads at a different size than it does on a flat mockup. A mockup that lays the design over the fabric like a flat sticker can make a print look bigger and sharper than it will be.

Honest ways to show print size:

  1. Include a worn image and say in the description which size the model is wearing. Buyers judge print size against a body.

  2. State the print width in inches or centimetres, taken from your provider's template, in an image or the description.

  3. Explain how size changes across sizes. Printify, for example, says designs "are not scaled up for sizes larger than L" (Printify print areas), so the same print looks smaller on a 3XL than on a medium.

  4. Choose mockups with believable folds and shading. The errors that make a listing look fake are collected in mockup mistakes that make Etsy listings look fake.

This matters because an item that does not match the listing description is not covered by Etsy Purchase Protection (Etsy Purchase Protection), and buyers read the photos as part of that description. For the fabric and fit of the 18000 itself, see our Gildan 18000 sweatshirt guide.

Sweatshirt mockups in Alomations

Smart mockups in Alomations render your design onto product photos with real fabric folds, shading and light, so the print bends with a heavy fabric instead of floating on it like a sticker. They are free to use. A background picker sets the scene for flat-lay shots, which is where your autumn and holiday images come from. Objects in front of the design, such as a hand or a strap, stay in front, and a zoom control lets a sweatshirt shot from far back fill more of the image. The built-in mockup library has ready product photos for catalog products such as the Gildan 18000 and the Comfort Colors 1566, so you can list without owning a photo. Smart mockups count toward Etsy's 20 images.

On paid plans, Mockup Preview shows every colour and every side before the run. You can also upload your own sweatshirt photos, set the print area once, reuse it in every run, and change the sweatshirt colour of your own photo live in Mockup Preview. Light and dark versions of the design are matched to each garment colour automatically. See features for more.

Frequently asked questions

How many photos should a sweatshirt listing have?

Etsy allows up to 20 photos and 2 videos. There is no fixed right number. Use enough images to answer each question in the table above, and do not pad the set with repeats of the same angle.

Should the main photo be a model or a flat lay?

Either works, as long as it shows one finished product, clear and well lit, and is not a collage. Before publishing, use the thumbnail preview to check how it crops to square, portrait and landscape.

What if the print looks bigger in the mockup than in real life?

The buyer expects the size they saw. If the item does not match the listing, you risk a return request and a poor review. State the print width from your provider's template and add a worn image.
