To get shirt mockups in every colour from one design, keep the design, its placement and the photo style fixed, change only the garment colour, and swap in a light version of the design for dark shirts. Dark colours need that second version because dark ink and dark outlines disappear into a black or navy shirt, while the same artwork reads perfectly well on white.
This matters for any listing that offers more than a handful of colours. Buyers compare colours by flicking through the photos, and if the design jumps in size or position between them, or fades away on the dark ones, the listing looks careless and the colour they wanted looks wrong.
What consistent colour mockups need
Consistency comes from holding everything still except the shirt.
One base photo or scene for the whole set, with the same angle, light and background.
The design at the same size and the same distance from the collar on every colour.
Accurate garment colours: the mockup shirt should match the real blank, so Heather Navy actually looks like Heather Navy.
Every image exported without transparency: Etsy says transparent .png files are not supported as listing photos, and recommends at least 2000 pixels in width and height.
Etsy's listing guide allows up to 20 photos and 2 videos per listing, and its variations article says that if you have more than 20 options, you can only add photos for 20 of them. With a wide colour range, choose which colours earn their own photo and show the rest in one colour chart image further down the gallery. Keep the chart out of the first slot: Etsy's search visibility checks look for a primary photo showing one finished product, with no collages.
Why dark shirts need a different version
A design is drawn for one background. Black lettering, dark outlines and deep shadows carry the design on a white shirt, and on a black shirt the same pixels sink into the fabric. Printing does not rescue it: the printer reproduces the colours in your file, and a dark colour on a dark garment stays low in contrast.
The fix is a light version of the same design. Dark lettering turns white or cream, outlines flip, and painted areas keep enough contrast to read. Print methods handle the white part differently: DTG on dark garments needs "a pretreatment coat and a white ink underbase", while DTF film carries a white ink layer that lets transfers work on any fabric colour. Either way, the mockup should show the light version on dark shirts, because that is what the buyer receives. We go deeper in light and dark versions of a design and in mockups for dark shirts.
Which version goes on which colour
| Garment colour group | Design version | What to check in the mockup |
|---|---|---|
| White, natural, pastels | Dark version | Fine lines stay crisp, no grey haze |
| Mid greys and light heathers | Usually dark, test both | Lettering contrast against the heather texture |
| Bright colours (red, royal, orange) | Depends on the artwork | Whether dark or white lettering reads better |
| Black, navy, forest, maroon | Light version | White areas look solid and no dark outline is lost |
Heathers and brights are where a fixed rule is most likely to miss, so look at those mockups one by one before you publish. If you are still deciding which colours to offer at all, which shirt colours to offer on Etsy walks through building a range.
One listing or several
A listing with many colours keeps reviews and favourites in one place, while separate listings let each colour carry its own title and photos. Consistent mockups work for both, and the trade-offs are in one listing with many colours or separate listings. Whichever you pick, check how the first photo crops. Etsy asks you to position your image so your subject is clear in all 3 views used across Etsy, and since June 2026 you can preview listing thumbnails before publishing.
How Alomations makes every colour from one design
Alomations works as a shirt mockup generator built around this problem, and it starts with the design: every design comes back with light and dark versions. Tone rules per garment colour decide which version each colour gets, automatically, and you can override any colour where your eye disagrees. The light variant turns lettering white even where it touches the drawing, and the dark variant keeps painted art and line drawings readable, so each colour in your template gets the version that reads on it.
Smart mockups then render the design onto product photos with real fabric folds, shading and light, and they are free to use. Objects in front of the design, such as a hand or a strap, stay in front. A front mockup can carry its own chest-logo spot, and a zoom (framing) control makes a product shot from far back fill more of the image. Flat-lay shots get a background picker, and every mockup can be downloaded. With Mockup Preview on paid plans, you see every colour and every side before the run, so a heather that needs the other version is caught before it reaches Etsy.
Paid plans also open your own mockup library: upload your own photos, set the print area once, reuse them in every run, and change the shirt colour of your own photo live in Mockup Preview. One good photo of your own becomes a full colour set. Smart mockups count toward Etsy's 20 images, so choose the colours that earn a photo. Smart mockups in Alomations shows the folds, shading and light up close.
When the set is ready, the run uses it with your template's sizes and colours, writes the title, all 13 tags and the description, and publishes the listing live in your shop or as an Etsy draft.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a separate design file for dark shirts?
Usually yes: a light version of the same design. Dark ink and dark outlines lose contrast on dark fabric, and the print reproduces what is in the file.
How many colour photos can I add to one listing?
Etsy allows up to 20 photos and 2 videos per listing, and photos for up to 20 variation options.
Can I use a transparent PNG as a mockup photo?
No. Etsy does not support transparent .png files as listing photos, so export mockups on a solid background.
Should the colour chart be the first photo?
No. Etsy's search visibility checks look for a primary photo showing one finished product with no collages, so lead with a single mockup.
