The easiest way to handle the Gildan 5000 colors is to sort them into a few families (whites and naturals, light heathers, darks, dark heathers, brights, safety colours and the Antique range) and decide for each family which version of your design it gets and what to watch for. Start each listing with dependable neutrals that suit almost any design, add brights or heathers only where they fit the niche, and let your own Etsy Stats and orders tell you which extra colours earn their place.

This guide is for sellers listing the Gildan 5000 (Heavy Cotton) who face a long colour list, a design that looks great on some shirts and disappears on others, and Etsy's limits on variation photos. Choosing colours on purpose saves you mockups, keeps listings readable and stops a white design from being sold on a white shirt.

What the Gildan 5000 is, and why colour changes the fabric

Gildan's US spec sheet describes the 5000 as "5.3-ounce, 100% US cotton", with a classic fit, no side seams and taped neck and shoulders. Gildan's European spec sheet, hosted by a distributor, gives 180 g/m² (175 g/m² for White).

The same US sheet lists exceptions that matter for your listing copy:

  • Ash is 99/1 cotton/polyester.

  • Sport Grey and the Antique colours are 90/10 cotton/polyester.

  • The heathers and some others, for example Dark Heather, Graphite Heather and the Safety colours, are 50/50 cotton/polyester.

So "100% cotton" in your description is wrong for some colours. Colour lists also differ between providers and change over time, so check your production partner's current list before you build a listing. If you are still choosing a blank, see Gildan 64000 or Gildan 5000.

Start with dependable neutrals

White, black, sport grey and navy are the colours most designs work on, and they go with almost anything a buyer already owns. They are also safe for gifts, where the buyer is guessing at someone else's taste. A core set like this uses both versions of your design: the dark version on white and sport grey, the light version on black and navy.

Natural and the other soft light shades widen the set without adding risk, and they suit vintage, floral and pastel designs. Our article on which shirt colours to offer on Etsy covers the reasoning behind a core set in more detail.

Add colours for the niche, not for the count

Brights and heathers earn a place when the niche asks for them. Red and forest green suit Christmas designs, orange and black suit Halloween, and school or team-style colours suit spirit and teacher designs. A family reunion or group order may want one bright colour everyone can spot.

Each extra colour costs you a mockup, a photo slot and a decision for the buyer. If a colour does not fit the design's mood or the occasion, leave it out. Watch your Etsy Stats and orders over time: the colours that sell for your designs are the ones to keep in your core set, and the ones that never sell can go.

How designs read on each family

The shirt colour decides which version of the design you need. On white and light heathers, dark lettering and outlines carry the design, and anything white in the artwork disappears. At least one provider does not print white ink on white garments at all, so white details simply vanish on a white shirt.

On darks and dark heathers you need the light version. Printing on a dark shirt also depends on the method: DTG needs a pretreatment coat and a white ink underbase on dark garments, while DTF prints a white ink layer on the film so it works on any fabric colour. Our guide to printing on dark garments explains the underbase.

Mid-tones are the tricky ones. Sport grey and many brights sit in the middle, where a mid-grey or mid-red design loses contrast in both versions. Test both versions on a mockup and pick the one that still reads from across a room. On dark and graphite heathers, the mottled fabric breaks up thin lines, so bolder shapes and thicker strokes hold up better.

How many Gildan 5000 colours to put in one listing

Etsy lets one listing carry up to 3 variation types, and listings with one or two variation types can have up to 4,900 option combinations. The tighter limit is photos: "If you have more than 20 options, you can only add photos for 20 of these options." Etsy's listing guide also caps photos at 20 per listing, and buyers cannot filter search results by custom variations.

In practice, a focused colour list that you can show in photos usually beats a full list buyers have to imagine. Our article on how many colour options a POD listing should have weighs the trade-offs.

How Alomations handles Gildan 5000 colours

Every design in Alomations comes back print-ready with a light and a dark version. Tone rules per garment colour decide which version each colour gets, so light shirts receive the dark version and dark shirts the light one, automatically, and you can override any colour. Our article on light and dark versions of a design explains when you need both. Before a run, you can preview every colour and every side in the smart mockups.

Variation profiles, on paid plans, let you save a size and colour set once and reuse it in every template: one profile for your core neutrals, another for a Christmas set. The Gildan 5000 is in our catalog with its "from" price, and the listing copy keeps fabric claims in line with your template's materials.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Gildan 5000 100% cotton in every colour?

No. Gildan's US sheet lists Ash as 99/1, Sport Grey and the Antique colours as 90/10, and the heathers and Safety colours as 50/50 cotton/polyester.

Which Gildan 5000 colours should a new shop start with?

A small set of neutrals such as white, black, sport grey and navy, which uses both the light and dark version of a design. Add brights or heathers when a design or season calls for them.

Can I offer every Gildan 5000 colour in one listing?

You can, but Etsy only allows photos for 20 options, so many colours would have no photo. A shorter list you can show usually works better.

Does one design file work on both white and black shirts?

Often not. Most designs need a dark version for light shirts and a light version for dark shirts, so neither loses its lettering or outlines.
